Tried my nephews last summer. Immense fun for a few minutes then meh. Not worth the monies.

Helps if you have a track and a timing beacon so you can check your times. If you've just driving around a big open space aimlessly then, yep, it gets old real quick.

Used to play with them a lot as a kid - a big group of us took them to the woods and jumped and crashed them to destruction.

You're right - it's less fun on your own, though my own kid is about the right age now, so going to get them into it :)
