You could get a SRAM GXP carbon crankset and get a direct mount 40t ring.
That should be pretty light. -

Nicest and lightest 40t single speed is Easton EC90 direct mount.

There's praxis and wolftooth direct mount chainrings too for the SRAM cranks but they go only to 42t.

Also, you can apparently fit a lighter BB30 force crank in a threaded BB. That, with a direct mount ring would be seriously light.
I have one in my parts bin, I'll report if I can make it work -

Ooh.....nice. The Sram looks good too, I’ll look into that. Ta

Yeah I got a pair of these from China. Waiting for the wolftooth chainring to make the experiment

I really like the cheap Origin 8 SS chainrings. 40T up front and a 9-42 cassette

Got a link to the chinese version? Keen to try something similar

It should work but if you wait a few days I'll report on this

I got it working now. When you account for the BB it comes at about the same width than BB86, so I used a similar arrangement with the spacers.
The ZTTO bottom bracket is weird, couldn't find any compatible tool so I used a tube and some grips. Ordered one from China.
All in all, very light but fiddly. You need a 103mm spindle, so only BB86 compatible cranks like Force. I think it's possible to put a wider spindle on Red cranks, but can't confirm
Having to repost this as I seem to have somehow disabled the reply function on my original post yesterday, fuck knows how. Anyway, let’s try again.
Right, spring is/was in the air and that means it’s time to crack on with my lightweight summer commuter. I built it up last year based on a loaned Planet X nanolight 54 - 1x10, Kysirium wheels, Ultegra mech and calipers, chinese riser crabon bars, crosstop levers etc. Very light and a lot of fun. I was using a Shimano Zee crank with a 38 ring, which was a bit industrial and heavy. The frame has gone back so I’m now looking for another frame, and I want to replace the crank too. So what’s the nicest, lightest, BSA-compatible crankset out there that I can use a 40t ring on?
