  • Sounds good.

I have no idea what we could play (and obviously not what they have)--I guess to start it would be best to play something that either one or several of us know and like, but let's get there and see. :)

  • Sounds good. Tuesday 12 March it is. What time can people get there? I'm down the road so could be there for 6pm, but 7pm may be more realistic for others.

  • 6 or 7 are both fine.

  • Yep, either is fine with me too. Will you book a table? Or d'you think there's no need?

(I've been to Draughts in Haggerston a few times and it's always been rammed out the door).

  • I'll book a table for 6pm

  • Got bought this the other day:

  • Played my first game of Spirit Island last night, followed the recommended "basic" setup and still needed to follow along with a youtube how-to video for first round and then lots of flipping through the rule book with a puzzled look and even a couple of trips to boardgamegeek for further clarification.

can totally see why it has the hype it does though, beautifully designed, complex but well thought out mechanics that tie into the theme, the way each spirit plays completely differently with its own identity and powers. the puzzle element to the strategy is pretty dynamic and the pacing of each round puts a degree of uncertainty into every move so everything unfolds after you've already made your choices leading to lots of nonononono or hell yeah

While gloomhaven has proven to be a (very entertaining) behemoth which wouldn't travel well and is really difficult to run concurrent campaigns due to the way lots of the cards are treated as single-use and removed from the decks making management between campaigns almost impossible, spirit island is a great game for a game night, i'd say everyone should watch an explanation video on youtube of the basics a few days before to make it go smoother.

  • Just a reminder, a few of us are meeting at http://proceedclockwise.com/ at 6pm tomorrow, Tuesday 12 March. Come down if you fancy a game or two.

  • See you both in a bit.

  • Excellent evening, and great to meet Drakien. We played three games--London, which took a while to learn before we played an open game, Geistesblitz (German for 'mind lightning', meaning a sudden idea), and Splendor (sic). The last two were expertly suggested by Drakien and were both great, while Lebowski and I picked out London before Drakien arrived.

We thought London was a good game, although the rules were badly written and I thought the card design left a lot to be desired--it looked to me as if they were left exactly like a first draft a games designer might do, only with a nicer graphical appearance. I think that makes the game less accessible than it should be. Drakien won this one by a country mile and we will probably want to play a closed game at some point.

Geistesblitz was a very fast diversion that would be great with kids. Excellent and simple rules. Won overwhelmingly by Drakien, who had played it lots before. It's also a very quick game (although you could conceivably play it for hours on end).

Splendor was a nice contrast, a very visual game that I won narrowly by one point over Lebowski.

The place is very good, featuring games tables with an elevated tabletop and space underneath it for bits and bobs and/or other games, a good beer selection, and pizza. The games selection is extensive and while Lebowski and I didn't know too many to start with, I think we made a good choice with London.

Definitely to be followed by another such evening!

  • Went to ludoquist a bit ago with a friend for her birthday, very far south but not bad.

  • Is there any halfway believable reason why you didn't go to Proceed Clockwise? :)

  • Great to meet you both. I'd definitely play London again with the benefit of knowing what comes later on in the game.
Good to know there's a boardgame cafe in Croydon too.

Someone asked, I can't remember who, but I've got 60 games at home, and have rated 300 or so on BGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/Drakien

  • It was me who asked--impressive list! I'm glad there were comparatively few stinkers. :)

Another question that occurred to me as I rode home: How would you rate Proceed Clockwise in comparison to Draughts?

  • Draughts has always been very busy when I've been, it was nice for PC to be a little bit quieter, although maybe that's to be expected midweek. Game collection looked to be about the same size, maybe a little smaller than Draughts.

  • I am also Interested.

I also have a wide collection of games (mostly introductory games like splendour, ticket to ride x2, takenoko, small dice and card games I also have 3 stragtegy games that I haven’t played properly, scythe, Eltritch Horror and some others I don’t know the exact name. I have western trail about cows collecting and chronicals of crime is arriving soon.

I have too many and not enough people to play with..

  • Great. We are trying to organise another session in April, so will post the date up on this thread as soon as we know.

  • @Yasi I'd be well up for playing Eldritch Horror some time.

  • Ditto.

I also have 90% of the Arkham Horror lcg content (everything except latest cycle basically) if that floats your boat, I have 2 core sets which is enough to build 4 player decks just about.

And I recently added a bunch of stuff to my collection I'd be up for bringing to a games session just need a little advance notice as I stash some of it at my mum's place in Brighton for when I'm down there looking after her.

  • Yeah Yasi! Come along. Hope you can make it.

  • Yes I will! Thanks all please keep me posted!

  • I've played the game a few times with the guys. It is good fun with a few beers. Been toying with the idea of painting the cyclists in team colours.

Still, the readability of the cards is sub-par. I'd imagine it was the AD who chose the look, not the designer.

  • @Drakien I recently bought Tyrants and love it!

  • @Yasi + anyone else that can make it

We were thinking of either 2nd, 9th or 16th of April for the next games night at Proceed Clockwise. Do any of those dates work?
