I was taught, back in the early 1970s by a Jesuit priest who had aspirations to modernity. He played Kumbya on the guitar. Having taken a vow of poverty he did not have access to sufficient funds to supplement his priestly wardrobe with trendy clothes but had somehow acquired a pair of flared green cords. Sadly, he was tall and their original owner had not been. They left a gap of a few inches above his ankle exposing sock and leg. He wore them every day. One day he was late for a class and we were amusing ourselves in the classroom. One kid was looking out of the window and saw the teacher approaching and warned us. Another boy exclaimed “Is he wearing those ridiculous green trousers again?” As he finished his question the priest came through the classroom door. An awkward silence ensued. We never saw the trousers again.
