Propane vs propylene

Posted on
  • I'm looking into making my first frame. I'm going to buy an oxy propane /propylene torch and get rent free bottles from gasuk.

Is it worth getting propylene over propane because it burns hotter. Does it work out significantly more expensive?

Does the ease of getting propane outweigh propylenes extra heat. As an amateur will i even notice the difference?

    Cheers

  • I haven't used Propylene but I use oxy/propane and oxy/acetylene. Acetylene is hotter and I find it nicer to use but I used Acetylene when starting out so it could just be what I'm use to.

It's up to you really but you can build a perfectly good frame with propane.

  • I use map pro and oxygen. I find map uses a lot less oxygen than propane to get to the required heat, and it is much less volatile than acetylene, so somewhat safer. Also much much cheaper! (I use one small 400ml cylinder of map to roughly 10l of oxygen)
