Freelancing in EU (Netherlands)

Posted on
  • Okay, I know this might change soon with that stupid British exit from the EU thing, but...

Does anyone freelance in an EU country? And if so, can you tell me anything about invoicing?

Basically, I'm a sole trader and have spoke to a company (via recruiter) in Amsterdam about a job. If I went to live there as an employee I get a hefty tax break. But if you freelance (resident) there, then later get a job, you don't get the tax break.

So, I need to know if I can invoice a client in Amsterdam the same way as I do in the UK. e.g - My residence is in UK, I travel to Amsterdam and freelance for say 4 weeks. Then return to UK.

  • Assuming you are talking about the 30% ruling?

If you perform your job in the Netherlands than you’ll be considered a resident and get taxes as such.

I’d say that you’re better off being employed as the CAO and labour laws still favour the employee over the employer.

  • Yeah the 30% thing.

This https://www.gov.uk/tax-foreign-income/residence seems to say money from working abroad would be taxed "normally" if you are classed as resident in the UK. (ie as long as you live in Uk for more than xyz days per year)

    Urgh.
