I don't think its rolling out until 20221 and then no guarantee GPU manufactures will be using it as a display connection (RTX cars use USB C).
Theres a lad on the other forum I frequent that's running PUBG on his Macbook @4K 60fps with a Vega VII, very tempting... -

Wise move... I say it every year but feel this really is a year where we will see some changes... new Mac Pro, possible 16inch MBP (but likely bumps all round anyway), Navi GPU's... Previously mentioned lad tested the Vega VII with MBP and Desktop Threadripper and the difference in FPS was around 10% which is pretty impressive IMO.
And thats in gaming, grown up tasks it may fair even better due to the way games are CPU + GPU bound. -

I have a font installed at the 'computer' level.
Chrome can see and use the font.
Safari doesn't seem to be able to. It uses Times instead. Which isn't even the default font - that's Arial.
Halp?

Hey guys,
I have an old 2010 iMac (my wife's computer) that's running slow. What are the steps I need to look at to help. Sorry but I know so little about this sort of thing.
It had the RAM upgraded a few years ago. Hard drive is only half full.
She says using Photoshop is unbearable.
I'd really appreciate any help.
Thanks -

I spent a bit of time searching for a solution to this last night and came to the conclusion that Safari (like IE) is just a bit weird

Hah thanks. Seems to work fine on my other Mac.

Replace th HD with an SSD. Back it up as you’ll lose your data. I don’t know much about iMacs but aren’t they glued together? You might need a pro to do it unless someone here knows how to take one apart.

What is the font you’re trying to display?
-
• #13837
It's Source Sans Pro. The page is being generated by a prototyping app.
It's the only non standard font installed on that particular Mac, which is brand new.
If I inspect the element, and alter the CSS by hand, the Font-Family find as you type even has Source Sans Pro in its list, but selecting it does nothing.

In the second hand market round my neck of the woods I see Ipad Minis "16 GB" offered for silly low prices. Knowing nothing about Ipads in general I wonder how shit an old Ipad is? My only use would be Wifi access to internet and email when travelling.
What is the oldest/lowest generation Ipad Mini I should consider? What could theoretically go wrong with an old Ipad? Do OS updates render the older models useless for example?

We have the first version. It works but is frustratingly slow. No idea how long apple will keep iOS working on it, but it’s useless for anything but watching tv and the odd google.

Yeah, I remember how my Iphone 4 died the moment Iphone 5 was released. They really force those OS upgrades upon you.

I've been given an external HDD with some files that appears to be in a Mac format (I can't see it on a windows PC). I've plugged it into a colleague's mac and it works but I can't copy the files onto my Windows (NTFS I assume) external HDD.
What format is a Mac formatted HDD, ext4 or something else? What formats can a Mac write to? Cheers
-
• #13845
Mac can generally read from NTFS but not write to, as you’ve found. There are ways of forcing it, but I’d just copy the files to the Mac and use a FAT32 or ExFAT formatted usb drive to move the files to windows.
The Mac drive will be HFS or APFS and may or may not be using a different partition map.
-
• #13846
Cheers, I suspected it would be something like this. Will format as FAT32 and have another stab.
-
• #13847
FAT32 limits the biggest file size to 4GB though. ExFAT should be the way to go

MacBook is dead (doesn't turn on) - Genius Bar at Apple Store says it needs a new logic board (which I guess is the same as a motherboard) and will cost £460.
Not so keen on coughing up, knowing anything else could conk out and there would be no warranty. Anyone know of any reputable 3rd parties that would do it for less? Or where I could get a decent part exchange?
Not confident about DIYing it with a dodgy one on eBay. Reaaally not keen on spending £x000s buying a new one unless I have to.
-
• #13849
Can’t answer your Q about 3rd party repairers, but how old is it? That would be my decider as to whether to fork out and pay for a repair. Personally I’d get Apple to do it if I decided to fix. Otherwise sell it for spares (remove/securely erase hard drive first) and get another secondhand one/new depending on how your wallet feels.

It's a 2013 MacBook Pro, and had a new display fitted on warranty last year (just that would have been £400).
Yeah, maybe worth selling for spares and getting a new one. Just sucks as I was completely happy with this one. Would happily keep it if I knew it wasn't going to break for some other reason. Maybe I can buy some sort of insurance/warranty for that.
