So indeed, I did not order a fenderflute, however we have a 3D printer at work so:
I found a thingiverse file (search for fender flute) and gave it a print. It uses some m6 locknuts and bolts, which conveniently we also have at work.
About as neat as it gets I suppose! Hopefully I should get some mega tyres on there in future. Not a bad half way house between the bodge and the real biz. I also shortened the brake cable so its a bit more pleasing.
Still putting off doing the derailleur.

What's the plant on the left?
It's a very small Tomatillo that I grew from seed not knowing what it was. It needs repotting reallyWhats happening in your garden why is it red?
I have red solar lights. -

From bolt cropping your chain off to 3D printing your own fender flute. I appreciate your range.

Great stuff. Are you planning a dead trendy rack and/or basket on that cool Surly fork? Got the braze-ons for it!

3D printing bespoke parts. I’ve lost all respect for your bodging skills.

Nice fork 😀 ace bracket, wish I’d done that

The rear derailleur works! As long as I don't shift too low. The big cogs all seem to want to kick the chain back down to a smaller one. I'm going to blame the lack of those little cable endy things that are meant to go into the cable guides. I only had two so some of the cable ends are just pushed into the guides I guess I can get them from the bike shop? I'll have to ask for little cable endy things. Do bike shops like it when you buy stupid tiny components from them or do they just consider you annoying? Should I just order them from somewhere? Can I make my own out of sugru or 3d printed ABS plastic? Answers on a post card.
Took me a while to get the gears sorted. First I didn't have the wheel properly mounted (the one thing that seems harder to do in a bike stand than if the bike is upside down) then I didn't have the jockey wheels properly tightened, then my ball headed allen key got stuck inside the bolt/axle holding one of the jockey wheels in somehow. It was pretty embarrassing but I persevered in the end to an extent.
Had a little go at putting the front rack on but I guess the vbrake studs are in place for a 26 rim and thus are too low for the fork mount. Having it mounted as in the pic below is not a good idea unless I find out we also have a CNC machine as well as a 3D printer in the office.
I could just mount a wald rack on the mid fork eyelets I guess. Bit annoying about this rack though. Also when i tighten the bolts my brakes stop working. Is there some technique to this? I put washers either side of the rack. It's a moot point seeing as I can't mount it on the fork crown but I still kind of want to know in the mean time. Not sure what to do with the rack. Might throw it at an enemy.
Rode the bike to work today though and I think...the bars aren't even. They're some cheapo ergotech ones I got from I think..ebay? Ages ago. but whilst riding they definitely seem skewed. I'll have to change them for some random wide riser bars I have kicking about. I would take a photo so you guys could judge but we all know the basic premise of this thread is that the photos are useless.
Other than the brakes not working, the gears not working, the steering not working and the front rack not working the bike is ready to go.

little cable endy things
Ferrules - beware that they're different for gears and brakes (different diameter cables).
-
• #36
I always though they were cable ferrets. Now I realize I'm an idiot.
OT: The bike looks cool, shame about the bars, hope you figure it out quickly! -

Turns out the stem wasn't straight. Nailed that, got some cable ferrules from the insanely grumpy man at the bike shop (probably sick of people trying to buy ferrules) removed the non working rack and attached this rack.
Rear derailleur is improved but still not great in big cogs. Its like it shifts up into the, but if i back pedal it falls off. Don't really get it, can't tighten the cable much more or it goes past the shifting down at the bottom.
I just realised probably the answer is to re tighten the entire system and start again, probably when it's at its slackest there's not enough tension in the cable so I need to tighten everything even further. Snap I just tidied everything away. Oh well. A job for tomorrow, probably the cables will stretch overnight anyway.

but if i back pedal it falls off
This isn't uncommon if the chain line isn't very straight in the lowest gears

What do you mean by goes past the shifting down?
Limit screws should be set to stop chain dropping off the bottom. Apologies if you have this covered.

• #41
is the rack mounted on 3d printed bit?
-
• #42
It was but that obviously wouldn't hold so I've removed it now and just mounted the basket to mid fork eyelets
-
• #43
As in if I tighten the cable further then I never get to the smallest cog, the tension is so high that the smallest I can get to is the second smallest cog
-
• #44
I had the same problem. Just kept fiddling till it worked. That and the fact my freehub is somehow wonky, so hopefully that’s not the case.
-
• #45
Is your chain maybe a little long?
-
• #46
Could be! I just took the chain off the old bike and slapped it on. It was the same drivechain but I guess it could be shorter length chainstays.
-
• #47
Just that the derailleur cage doesn't look particularly extended. It will take up some slack, tighten your chain and make shifting a bit better if it is shortened (providing it is too long)
-
• #48
I could also try swapping the chainring onto the other side of the cranks if its a chainline thing. Might give that a punt tonight.

I got some new wheels which have come with a 9 speed cassette. What shifter would you recommend? Preferably something I can grab for cheaps on eBay?
-
• #50
I've got dodgy internet as I'm on a train. Remind us what derailleur you've got?
If it's Shimano any 9-speed shifter ought to work
Houseplant game is strong.
Buy the fender flute if you aren't happy with your bodging skills. I have been there and the money spent on the properly engineer bodge is usually far superior to my own attempts. YMMV
