Vittoria tape is decent.

You're all crazy. I've been using electrical tape for a couple of years with no problems; and that's couriering.

Apologies for reviving this elderly thread, but a quick cautionary tale seems in order. I used two layers of electrical tape on my new wheels and it worked perfectly for a few months until Sunday, when I rode out to Kent to watch my dad playing a jazz gig. Sunday was very hot and braking my way carefully down a steep hill I managed to heat the tape enough to cause the inner tube to blow through it, leaving me stranded. As luck would have it, there was a Budgens in the nearby village that sold both sellotape and cheap tape measures, which was sufficient to ghetto-fix me as far as the gig, a train and from Victoria back home.

This morning, I got some proper rim strips.

the schwalbe rim high pressure rim tape works well.

Rim tape can't weigh that much.

Why would you need to use plugs?

wow cool! i'm well getting these. lately i've been feeling that my times on my 2 mile downhill commute to work (on my mass produced, mid-market steel framed fixed gear road bike, wearing jeans and mtb shoes while carrying two heavy locks and a bag full of waterproofs, spare clothes, tools, spare tubes, swimming stuff, ipod, cds, files, pens and occasionally and ummmm... fags) have really really been suffering.

i've been thinking about it and i've narrowed it down to the weight of my rim tape.

this product is going to change my life.

I've got Veloplugs in all my wheels, pain in the bum to position (they are a fraction too small so don't hold in very well, you need to bend the prongs on the underside out to get them to stick) - but once in position they are held there by the inner tube.

Are you saying you have never made any 'Jazz deliveries' ?

Velox cloth rim tape FTW. Cheap, quality, works. Pick three.

The leccy tape had obviously softened right up in the heat - each spoke hole had a little concave hemisphere, with a matching dome in the inner tube and the taoe had formed itself to the shape of the rim as if it was paint. 120psi tyres probably didn't help, but I've never seen anything like it.

It was a smashing gig, though. Well worth it.

Anyone had Velox tape creeping over and exposing spoke holes over time? Is it more prevalent with low pressure fat rubber or something? I'm tempted to replace with that plastic tubeless style tape (Tesa tape aka Stans) but then peeps reckon that splits?

Yes had that . Water seams to get in and they slip to one side . Gone conti easy tape

I’ve always hated velox tape for that very reason. Electrical tape works fine for me when not doing tubeless.

I'm thinking of getting some of the Schwalbe high pressure rim loops to test out.

I mean yeah, proper rim tape is better of course... but I never have some at hand when I need it, and always have electrical tape. So....

I normally have rim tape kicking around because I buy a 2-pack but only destroy one wheel at a time normally. I've bought some of the Schwalbe HP loops to try out. I have some Tesa tape but I think it's too wide.

The loops seem like a no-brainer.

I've used them in the past but that was on much cheaper wheels and I've used Velox for ages with no drama. I think I forget that I ride quite a lot more than I did back in Oz sometimes and wonder why stuff wears out/breaks.

Hey All,

I have a rim that is puncturing all my inner tubes, so i think its time to get rim tape. Is there a standard 700c size rim tape? Im running 25x700s

Before someone says i shouldve had from the start, i bought a fancy non tape requiring rims (this may be a falicy as it was a looooooong time ago) but ive never needed them until now on these rims. I think there is a spur somewhere now (age).

I usually use Tesa tape which has worked for setting up several wheels tubeless now but it would work fine for tubes too.
It's cheap when you consider you get 66m in a roll. Depends whether you're likely to need to do wheels in the future I suppose.

It's not very stretchy or indeed very sticky but once you get a full circumference on, it sticks to itself ok.

Edit: in fact, do you just want to try some of my roll? I'm in Putney
