And also @salmonchild isn’t it more the 1/9/90 theory, paraphrasing badly
1% super engaged and leading the charge
9% engaged
And 90% lurking/Reading.Forum continues to grow, older users slip away or stay in the threads they know, and newer users engage with the forum as new users do.
The forum’s reputation is the forums reputation, and it’s still growing because it’s still open to new members, whether they stay or go is entirely up to them.
We’re a vibrant forum from what I can see, and people both old and new value it.

Without any evidence or numbers it's hard to confirm or deny this, but my observation is similar to salmonchilds. A handful of postalots dominate quite a few main threads.
I don't see much evidence of the forum growing in the way that it used to. And whilst there are new users, it doesn't seem like there are a lot of them; we seem to get a couple every now and then that post very frequently, rather than many new users, all the time, posting moderately. You're defintely right about old users slipping away. I just don't see tbem being replaced. And as for LLFGSS, that definitely seems to have died. And again, it's hard to tell, but I don't get the impression that there are a lot of female voices on the forum these days.
Those are just my observations.

It feels different even taking into account the behaviours you mention. Looking to see if my impression is correct.
@dst cheers, I knew I had seen the numbers listed like that but couldn't find the thread.
double whammy: probably less new members AND ALSO the internet's friendliest forum doesn't actually encourage people to sign up/be different
