  • Ran out of talent. 'Murica.

  • With thule Roof rails, do you just buy the fittings that match your car, then whatever rails you want?

  • Thule recommend rail model and length by car, but fitment method is same for all types.

  • Basically your car will be a certain Thule bar length and fitting kit. Depends on rail type to.

    You can prolly Google this.

  • I'll be coming to you after this. I really want a full fat 182 on Speedlines. Looks to be a great daily with weekend potential and possible track shindigs when the moolah is there.

  • Beautiful! We have one which has been a never ending disaster restoration for basically the last decade. Hopefully get it back together at some stage in the not too distant future.

  • Cheers

    Google this.

Everything seems to be bringing up "thul bars for golf"rathet than breaking it down.

I'm basically trying to work out how limited my eBay search has to be.

  • Do it. It would be a great everyday car that could handle a more hooligan aspect too. The Speedlines are the wheels to go for. If/when I move back to the UK, a tidy 172/182 is high on my list.

  • Sites like roofracks.co.uk allow you to select options by vehicle. I found this the easiest way to see what was required.

  • I used this: https://www.thule.com/en-gb/gb/buyers-guide

Then bought everything (bars, ‘foot pack’ and bike rack) off Rutland Cycling, which seemed to be cheapest.

  • There's a lot either without history, or have obviously been ragged to shit. The ones you do find that are obviously taken care of, are ones that close the gap price wise to a Trophy. Something I really don't want to think about.

  • Cheers.

The Cruz airo from roofracks.co.uk look like the best new option. Tbh I'm still not sure why messing about with ebay and possibly paying the same/more for a 2nd hand set of Thule is better than a new set of Cruz. Their weight and man load are similar, and they are areo.

  • Stop fucking about and get the Thule wing bars.

  • Wingbar or Wingbar Edge though?

  • I just fitted some wing bar edge ones, excellent quality, fit well, really impressed. Best price I could find was on Amazon. There are some bargains on eBay if you can wait and also find the right width etc.

  • Yeah, I think it will take a bit of searching to find the right car but it'll be worth it when you do. Or if you can stretch to a Trophy, go for one of those. I think they will be a bonefide collectors car in another 5-10 years.

Jolly disappointing.....big bang under hard braking, and then fatal scraping noises.....

  • They're double the price, so realistically they'll have to be 2nd hand... which seems to involve more fucking around than buying the Cruz which looks like the same copy of the whisper design as the wing bars.

  • wing bar edge

Does your car already have roof rails? Couldn't see these as an option.

  • Roof bars are one of the areas where you’ll regret going cheap. Buy roof rails for your car from a breakers, fit them using high quality steel bolts, get Thule as theirs a whole system that integrates.

I keep the wing bars on the roof all the time and then slot in what I need- takes seconds as every single lock uses the same key.

28.7mpg over 2 hours yesterday coming back from Luton, averaging (IIRC) 43mph, so they’re not impacting on the fuel economy, nor can you hear them.

  • Unfortunately, only the estate seemed to come with oem fixed rails for the golf.

Given it's taken me 5wks to not fully paint one small wall the chances of me finding a breakers let alone the time for the rest is a pipe dream.

    #neverreproduce

  • You’ve got fixed points in the roof then I imagine?
