  • Anyone near SE1 has a Dremel to borrow? Need it for a couple of hours and will ride over to pick it up!

  • I've got one in Peckham Rye you're welcome to borrow? Home tomorrow evening if that's any use...

  • In fact, I work in London Bridge so could bring it into work if that's more convenient for daytime pick-up...

  • Even better, let me know when's best to meet and I'll pop over, I'm down the road at Southwark Bridge.

  • Your third picture is the location of my original shot with the pink Cedric Clayson on c.1980, in Shrewsbury Road W2. I came past today and took a snap. Compare and contrast!

  • Thanks very much for taking the time to reply, I thoroughly enjoyed that tale, though sorry to hear the Cedric was stolen.

And having looked at the pic, yes that matches your original pic for sure, the old grey matter still works fine fella, and the legs are clearly still turning over too, revisiting the same spot 39 years later, good work :)

Will these work with disc brake callipers on the end? Or are they different enough to not work, different resivour size etc?

  • Will these work with disc brake callipers on the end?

You can read all the manuals on SRAM.com. I can't find anything in there which indicates a distinction between levers for hydraulic rim brakes and levers for hydraulic disc brakes.

  • Why are you so interested in the exact location of the telecomms cabinet mate? And why no 'proper' LFGSS handle? Seems odd. You are obviously not a troll!

My visit today was entirely serendipitous. Was riding back from an excursion down to Staines along the Thames, profiting by the exceptional weather. My route from home (Kilburn) routinely takes me past that spot in Westbourne Park (where I used to live). I would be a richer man by far had I had not sold my house there.

And yes, fortunately my legs are still fully operational.

  • Thought they were the same 'ting?

  • same 'ting?

    That's the TL;DR of what I said 🙂

  • I need to fit new brakes on my wife's mixte to replace the shit old Weinmanns. They're both side pulls, but the rear is slightly unusual in that the cable enters from underneath. Quite big clearance needed as it runs 26, 35mm tyres.

What's a good option, the only new brakes I can see that take the cable from below seem to be BMX brakes - not sure how well they will work on the road?

  • Ah, interesting, but I should have said the brief I've been given is silver only

  • Ha! I can believe there are men out there fascinated with telecoms cabinets, but I assure you I'm not that guy :)

I was simply trying to find the exact location of the 'I fought the law' graffiti from 'the writing on the wall' book published in the 70's. I've been visiting other spots from the book to show how they've changed in the 40+ years since the original photos were taken.

The graffiti is long gone and the only other identifying feature I could see in the original photo was the markings on the telecoms box, so hoped it may help identify the road the original graffiti was on.

  • The graffing style in my pic ('Billy the Kid...') is identical to that shown in the book. Careful comparison of the location shots then and now (look at the stucco panels) makes me as good as certain it's at the east side of Shrewsbury Road W2, opposite the school. (In fact the side wall of the last house in St Stephen's Gardens.) If you approach from Westbourne Park Road, it's just beyond the pub shown below:

  • This one will run and run.

I've found a few more walls like that in the area, and it looks as if there may be more candidates. It seems to be a style that was used for developments several times around there. Obviously, the wall in question may since have been torn down, but let's not fear the worst. :)

  • Has anyone used Shimano's newish PD-ES600 MTB-type SPD pedals?

I need to replace my ancient PD-A520s, but I'm a bit confused why this new-but-not-that new Shimano pedal has few online reviews and little UK availability.

In fact I can only find one review, which says they don't hang at the right angle. Maybe they're a flop? Any experience?

  • Supplementary but different question - once Shimano SPDs develop 'rocking on the spindle' play, rather than 'loose bearing' play, is it fair to assume they are near death, or are at least an economic write-off?

  • I've got the same question, but how do you define / distinguish the two types of play?

  • Well, I suppose by 'loose bearing' play I mean small movement primarily along the axis of the spindle.

I suppose I should say 'if I have tightened bearings and they still wobble, are they dead' - to which the answer is almost definitely yes - but don't really want the hassle of opening them up and adjusting them if they are already dead.

  • Can you recommend a good second bookshop - probably online - to get a specific landscape design book, only from 2010 but out of stock from publishers.

  • small movement primarily along the axis of the spindle.

    normally called 'end play'.

Not sure how you would expect to have end play without any radial play ('rocking movement'). A small amount of end play is likely more noticeable than the accompanying radial play.

  • PD-ES600

Looks like there's more flat area for a shoe to rest on than the A520, similar to what the A600 has (see picture comparing A520 and A600). I still reckon they'll fall back - the steel latching parts are gonna be quite dense compared with that alloy loop at the front.
