Yeah it's proper grim. Ianal but I think it positions it against a violent assault, which may have a legal significance similar to the wolf pack case (rightly or obviously wrongly).
Think the defence is also trying to make it not a trial of the whole Catholic Church by proxy.
Clearly still abhorrent.
