Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • If you're ok with earbuds that shield ambient noise very much then I'd say Shure SE215.

  • My ears don't like normal buds. I would recommend ones with a 'fin' rather than hook, I find it much more comfortable, especially if you want to wear glasses at the same time. I have Jaybird X3 and Bose QC20, both stay secure enough to use in the gym or on the bike.

  • These look great and haven’t come up in any of my searches. I do really want that sound isolation.

I still worry I’ll have the same problem where they just don’t stay in; with my Beats earbuds and other cheaper sets, with any of 5 different sizes, I can be sitting still and my ears just slowly push them out. @chiroshi is that what you get, and the fins stop it?

  • For me, designs like apple earbuds just do not grip at all, I have quite a wide channel where the stem sits.
In ear tips are also sometimes uncomfortable, or lose grip, but I find with the fins I can use a smaller tip and still the headphones stay in.

  • have you tried the comply tips?

  • still worry I’ll have the same problem where they just don’t stay in

..google some pictures or youTube videos -
the cable does not go straight down, but up, then behind the ear - so there's no pull on the earbuds like with normal ones, the first centimeters are bendable like a wire so you can sort of mold them to your ear. This works really well, and still works with thick sunglasses I've found.
Also the earbuds have those foamy kind of tips that you squeeze before you insert them so they then expand again when in your ear (this is part of what blocks outside noise so well and it also helps with them not falling out as easily).
Not gonna lie this all is a bit fiddly / unusual at first but sound quality is very good and they're comfy and don't fall out easily.

I only went for different kinds of headphones as I have to talk to people a lot intermittendly, and actually they isolate outside noise so well it isn't really enough to pause the music as you'd still have trouble hearing somebody speaking to you with those earbuds in if they don't have quite a loud voice..

  • Ooh no, could be a good call

  • Amazing, thanks so much.

  • Second Tina's vote. Shure/Shure style headphones are great. Block out a load of noise and they won't fall out, helps that they sound great. If Shure's are too steep there's loads of Chinese headphones manufacturing similar stuff like Mee Audio.

  • I've always had this problem - just got a pair of these and really pleased with the sound and the solidity of the bluetooth connection, at least for the price! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Headphones-TaoTronics-Waterproof-Sweatproof-Lightweight-Black/dp/B0749GJWQK/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1550674296&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=anker+bluetooth+earphones&psc=1

  • Ha, I have those ones. They're less good if you stand on them in the gym (although to give them their dues, they are still working despite that)!

I was actually going to post here to see what other recommendations people had for gym headphones as I want to upgrade

  • Ended up going to Selfridges and they let me try a few different types, settled on these:

£89 – The Shure ones were great but £130, and I already wasted £60 on some Beats earphones a couple of weeks ago.

  • Any idea if they work with Iphone X?

  • they're bluetooth, so yes
Also title is 'Wireless Headphones for iPhones'

  • Different bluetooth standards my friend.
Not all the far east cheapo ones work with the most recent phones.

  • Fair point. But most things are at least bluetooth 4 or greater (and it did say 'for iPhones')
Pay £2 more to get Bluetooth 5 in the title and you're set

  • Bought some Bose QC20s at the airport over the weekend, they're a game changer for me as I'm not great with flying and for the 1st time in my life I fell asleep on a plane due to the noise cancelling properties. The weird wing bits are really comfortable as they enable the bud to sit over the ear canal instead of having to be wedged in which is one of my main gripes with in-ears. Have only listened to podcasts so far so can't fully judge the sound quality but they sound decent enough

  • Do all Bluetooth headphones sometimes do a little glitch where they cut out for a split second? Can’t decide whether to put up with this or go back to wired. It’s about twice per album but that’s enough to tip me over.

  • Mine do not.

  • Depends where you're wearing them. If you're out and about with a lot of interference from other signals, then yeah, it'll happen. At home on your couch, it shouldn't.

Also if you've paired them with more than one device then sometimes the device you're not listening to will grab control for a second before the other device regains control. So best to deactivate bluetooth or unpair the other device if this is happening.

  • It’s exactly that, pretty sure it happened twice when a bus went past. Even with my phone in my top jacket pocket so like a foot away from the headphones. Oh well, win some lose some

  • Be careful. If it’s the right earphone that is the master, with the left being the slave, and the phone is on the left hand side of your body, this can cause issues. Happened to me but on the right side of my body there’s no problem. Just a thought.

  • any one got good recommendation for duel blue tooth and wired head phones pref ear bud ones. I like blue tooth for excersise/running but preferred wired for when I'm traveling.

  • If you want earbuds then Shures - the cables are already replaceable and you can buy the BT cable separately.

  • ta will have a look
