Honestly, no idea about weight. It's no featherweight, with all metal everything, dyno hub and rack. But it's looow audax gearing, so I don't really notice it.

Maybe a touch, but had no abuse from drivers so far! I think those photos make it look worse than it is. Better one here...

This whole discussion re front vs rear loading is only being kept going by those who have only tried rear loading, and are sceptical of front without having tried it.

Pretty accurate! the former being cheaper doesn't help.

Unfortunately the fork and frame have no eyelets for racks. If longer rides prove to be less comfy I can get a new fork but test rides have been quite comfy so far. I'm not taking heavy gear - no tent, no cooking equipment, etc. For commuting just a pair of shoes and a set of clothes. For the trip to Burgundy a set of normal clothes plus some extra cycling clothes, enough to get me from gîte to hostel to gîte for a week. The bags won't be full but there's two for even distribution of the load.

Those bags are huge for only bringing some clothes. Maybe you could just strap a small drybag on top of the front rack and use a saddlebag too.

Would that not put the weight even higher?

Bike's stunning, panniers look good. Use what you've got, what'll hold a lot will hold a little.
