  • Popped out for a gentle 5 miles round the park. Legs felt good, fitness hadn't totally evaporated, and I didn't splutter my lungs onto the pavement. Maybe racing twice this weekend won't be such a disaster!

  • It all depends how tough the National is on Saturday!

Did my first 20 of the marathon campaign in Saturday morning. Am still feeling it a bit today having only done easy running on grass and trails since. Track session tomorrow, 70 minutes on Wednesday and then its time to focus on Leeds - I'm looking forward to it.

  • Thank you. Still find it hard to believe I was able to do 50-60km a week at some point in the not so distant past.

  • National xc forecast looks like it could be a racing flats & factor 50 kinda day now...

  • Yes, someone sent me that forecast earlier. fingers crossed for rain.

  • Scrap all that - the run has put me back on my arse for two days. Bumped into a clubmate last night and he said everyone's dropping like flies with it. BAH!

  • That's bad news. So the national is definitely off?

Is everyone else still going? It would be good to put some faces to names and strava profiles.

  • Yeah all being well remainder of week (bit nervy about sniffles etc now)

It would be good to put some faces to names and strava profiles.

+1 be good to say hello...

@nefarious sorry to hear you're struggling for it.

  • I'm not running the Nationals, but my son is in the U13s. Don't know what name he's under. He joined the club too late to enter, but has a reserve place due to 'person x' dropping out. Should be a great experience for him. I won't be there to cheer on him and any of you lot though. Handing him over to the club officials at aaaaaargh o' clock on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile I got a 7th place finish in the Harrow Hill 10k carrying a soleus sprain. Missed the V40 top spot – outpaced by a 42-yr-old whippersnapper. Had a few days off. Achilles happier, soleus still vulnerable to damage from any kind of stretching. I have the most random collection of events to do over the next few weeks (road/trail/5 mile up to 15) and then, ankles permitting, I want to revisit my youth and do some sprint training. Plummeting mileage ahoy!

PS. Anyone wondering about New Balance Beacons and their Ground Contact Fresh Foam innovation, the longevity's fine. I retired my first pair at 825k due to some midsole compression. Probably would've pushed them further if I hadn't already had a spare pair waiting. The first lot are now a walking/casual shoe. Plenty more life in them for that. Blah.

  • Tomorrow marks the end of an era for me. I'm passing on my running pushchair to a club mate in Sheffield.

I've spent many an hour pushing my kids about in this, normally the twins, but every now and again with a big sister substitute.

I've had a shout at the Nationals 'go double pushchair' and been paid to model a jacket off the back of pushing it at speed.

5k PB of 18.26, all the way back in 2016

  • Hope everyone had a good day at Nationals today. @rhb sending the message out definitely helped convincing me to go.
Mixed emotions, everything went ok, just a bit slowly. But I probably only felt like I was slow, because I felt so much better than expected and didn’t push it as a result. Also, it was my first ever XC race, so shouldn’t complain/expect better.

Sorry I missed everyone, got stuck in traffic and only collected my number at 2.30, then had to dash to the in-laws straight away once I’d finished.

Provided I’m not dead tomorrow, im actually quite keen for Ilkley.

  • I didn't particularly enjoy that today... Lots of sweeping grass bends and gentle inclines do not make a cross country course, give me mud, tree roots and rocks.

Nice to meet @rhb. Next time @nefarious and good luck at Ilkley.

  • It was a very 'runnable' course and not the mudfest I'd put 15mm spikes in for, the xtalon i brought too were a much better choice - made for fast descending with confidence.

Glad you made it @nefarious and felt ok if slowish, sorry we didn't cross paths. It was good to say hello to you @juanito briefly before & after, you looked fresh!

The next (Mids hosted) national at Woolaton should be more xc like...

  • The last one at Woolaton was a mudfest if I remember rightly.

I ran comfortably hard today, 50 something in the end. I parked my car up at the far end, at the top of that long hill, so that made for a decent cool down.

I think I saw the Kent AC chairlady in a bit of distress at the 2k mark, along with a couple of other ladies, I hope she's ok

  • Nice run.

    Yes, you did. Broken ankle.

  • That's awful. Sorry to hear that

  • I'd missed that you'd be there, nice run. Think I've Strava stalked you via the lfgss run group xc segments.

  • in case you were wondering what I look like, here is one of my race photos. white and blue hoops

  • Did my first loop and longest run (12km) today of Richmond park trail.
I am definitely going to be spending more sundays there.

  • Where are the photos up?

  • Absolute corker at Ilkley today. Course pb on tired legs suggests that I’m in better fettle than I thought. Low expectations lead to taking it easy and enjoying the shit out of it in the sun. 99/300~
A really wonderful weekend of racing.

  • Similar one from my pics:

  • If you don't have Facebook you can't see your pictures.

Which is a bit shit IMO. I had to 'like' Saucony to get to my pics. This shouldn't be forced.
