Protecting a steel frame from rust

Posted on
  • Recently got a Cinelli Vigorelli Steel. But it’s beginning to rust a bit on the chain stays :/. Anyone know how to protect it from rust in the future

  • Wash it reasonably often, especially in winter with salt on the road, dry it properly, then wipe with an oily rag. Touch up any paint chips. Maybe waxoil the inside or use framesaver (it burns, it burns...) I’ve never bothered with either and I haven’t died.

Surface rust is common and removable with a gentle scrub. It’s nothing to be worried about, but can look a bit rubbish. But if you leave it or leave crud (esp. salty road crud) in the nooks and crannies in the frame, then you can be in bother.

  • Good clean regular with baby wipes, any rust spots clean up with a bit of Duraglit or metal polish (Autosol) or rub (gently) with a bit of tinfoil, and then seal with clear metal lacquer (paint on, not spray) to be extra sure. Spray the inside of the tubes with frame-saver as well or some Fenwicks multi-purpose lubricant if your doing regular (i.e. six-monthly) proper strip-downs and cleans (obvious depends on how often / regular / conditions you ride in.)

    edit> what @c00ps says :)

  • Thanks very much I’ll strip it down ASAP and spray some frame saver. And scrub the rust spots off. And paint over the rusty spots to help preserve the frame.
    Thanks again, life savers.
Shouldn’t be happening with a brand new cinelli after a couple of months, really unhappy.

  • Warranty claim?

  • Might be worth a try, been ridden less than 300 miles

  • Might be treatable with ACF50
