Awesome write up, thanks for sharing. Especially enjoyed the bit about sleeping in the bivy haha reminds me of sleeping in my hammock with 20 mosquitos on my face.

Finally gone tubeless on the Straggler, with some slightly wider & deeper wheels

Is this the 64cm?

Is this the 64cm?
Yup, unfortunately Surly only do up to a 62cm now
They also stopped doing the Ogre in XXL, along with a couple of other models, so I'm I glad I got them both when I did :-/

That’s a long way down for a drink
Those cannondale cages?

I can't really figure out their reasoning. They finally added a 64cm size for the CrossCheck, and then brought out the Midnight Special in a 64cm. Why stop the Straggler? It's popular enough

Those cannondale cages?
They certainly are

Got a message from a friend enquiring about Surlys: she wants a bike for commuting, longer rides and touring. She has heard steel is best for touring, so I think that is the most important role it will fulfill. Which of the range suits those needs the best?

make a day out of it!

Whats the budget? is she looking to build a bike or buy a complete? Surlys are great for us bikeys who like building, but tbh their completes are very expensive for what they are. I'd recommend looking at the Genesis tour de fer

There is a Cross Check for sale on the bay in Gloucester

Pack rat or LHT? Seems to be a surly stockist in Gloucester with pack rats for sale.

The new Sonder Santiago is a pretty good looking Straggler alternative. Vertical rear dropouts but Reynolds 631, and cheaper: F&F £400, Sram Apex flatbar build £1099, Rival22 Hydro build £1550.
Disc brakes are king for commuters.
Great stuff!
@jontea Thanks, that means a lot. Always stuff planned; will probably do The Badger again, couple of 600km audaxes, some organised events like The Dirty Reiver and then probably some or all of the Welsh part of The Pan Celtic Race route when I go visit my folks in Swansea later in the year.
