• Anyone got a spare Powertap track hub/wheel?

  • @danstuff will have at least 7 of them

  • No such thing as a spare Powertap. I have got 5 track hubs in regular use though, and one destined for use on Brommers Bike #6, my Fixed Winter Trainer.

  • You don’t by chance want to trade one for spare Powertap g3 hub I have lying around?

  • Fraid not. Got enough Powertap geared hubs at the moment, and I'm either using or have very concrete plans for the track hubs.

  • Fair enough, let me know if you end up with an orphan one at some point.
    Anyone else got any?

  • Hey all, I think my powertap sl+ hub broke on me, it connects just fine to a garmin but regardless of how much power I'm putting out it always shows 0w (and 0rpm). Tried taking out batteries and changing them, didn't help. Anyone had similar experiences in the past? Dead strain gauges or any other magic that's inside?

  • Yeah, I've killed a few in my time. I would send them off to Paligap to be serviced.

I think nowadays they generally replace the SL internals with the G3 bits. That's what I'm currently using on my turbo bike.

  • Thanks, will contact Paligap and see what they quote me for that job.

  • Actually the last time I got one serviced it was euservice@powertap.com so I'm not sure if Paligap are still doing them or what.

  • I've emailed both Paligap and Powertap EU service. Got a very prompt response, Paligap 'no longer distributes or services Powertap products'. The Powertap service also replied and quoted 320gbp (+25gbp for shipping, I'm in the Netherlands), for what I understood, whatever is wrong with a pre-G3 hub they always change the internals to G3. I was also told that the conversion kit would have a 2 year warranty which I reckon is quite good.
From a financial point of view repairing it does not seem to make much sense, used wheels go for less :'(

  • Guess it depends what it's laced to? If it's a cheap rim then, yeah, you can probably find a functional G3 wheel cheaper. I used to just get mine serviced because wheels were more expensive back then and I had expensive wheels that I didn't want to lose.

  • To a dt r460 rim so nothing special

  • What's the consensus on vector pedals? I've been given a 40% off voucher by Garmin to make up for crappy service.

  • I've got some Vector 2s and I've been very happy with them. They're a bit fiddly to install but once fitted they just seem to work. Don't know about the 3s though.

  • There seem to be good ones and bad ones. I know people who’ve had no issues and others who’ve sent them for replacement and (eventually) ended up with a reliable set.

  • stages 105 seems to be marked down.

Pro: i've always wanted to try a power meter.
Con: I only have shimano on my commuter/winter/gravel bike. So not swappable to good/summer bike.
Con 2: I'll probably only look at the numbers for a week and then see how weak I am and forget about it.

  • Just look at the power estimates on Strava and save yourself the money

  • Isn't this forum meant to encourage people to make pricy purchases? Damn.

  • Get some Phil hubs like it’s 2008 again

  • Ignore Howard. He's retired from cycling now

  • Really happy with mine.

  • If you get Vector 3's make sure you get the newest battery covers - ask Garmin for them and they will send for free.
