So an ex-con with sweatshop worker skills who has no job having left prison as it's more sustainable to keep using the cheaper prison labour?

They could setup outside of a prison but that would cost more as the roof overhead would be more than 6ft by 8 ft(if they even get that there). Doubt they will break free from poverty unless they plan to dig them out or help jump the fence.

Or am I missing something and the project is aimed at death row?

No doubt cost of production could be lower, but in reality what % is labour cost from Peru / Thailand (either inside or outside prison)? Ie how much could sub-standard pay increase margins on a small-run luxury good? At scale, the likes of GAP would see a worthwhile return, but I struggle to believe that these guys would.

At a guess import duties and raw materials are probably on par. If they're based in Copenhagen then their local costs will be huge.

You can call it out as cynical marketing guff to differentiate themselves in a crowded market, but I just don't buy the idea that it would be a useful strategy to reduce costs.

Just for context, most prisons offer voluntary work schemes. They usually pay between £4 and £10 PER WEEK which can only be spent in the prison shop on snacks and toiletries and are normally the most menial tasks you could possibly imagine such as shredding textiles for recycling.

There's a documentary on Netflix about some enterprising women who find an effective -- and perhaps surprising -- way to significantly improve their personal financial outcome from working in a prison clothing factory...
