Been lusting over various surly's (surlies?) for years but never really found myself in a position to buy one, however with the plan to sell our car and go car-free I needed something tough for spinning around London on. At almost the exact same time, a steamroller frame popped up on here in my size.
Collected it yesterday and threw the finishing kit of my old mtb on it to get started.
Will be a relatively slow burner build as funds allow but hoping to have it running by next month!
Planning to rattle can the finishing kit black, and run it with a big rack or basket and dog trailer.

You should be able to remove the graphics on the seatpost, stem, handlebars, etc. with acetone.
Or do you want to paint it because of the scratches? -
• #2554
To remove graphics, will try acetone first

A chain and pedals away from being rideable, and a front brake away from being safe!

is that because its next to your hob?

I think I have a black 105 front brake knocking around somewhere if that's of interest.

New colour is nice. Also, mudguard eyes are back, on the rear at least.

I think this needs a long drop brake from what I've been told, but thank you!

Standard no? I think I have standard reach on mine.

Needs standard drop but some people call that long drop. 105 is short reach.

Nice, very similar build to mine. Wasn't sure about it at first but now it's my most used/favourite bike. I tested a few front brakes, forget Tektro, if you can stretch go for the TRP, i got one on discount and it's amazing.

So strange that they only put guard mounts on the rear. Lovely colour though!

Just picked up this 2007 56cm that looks pretty stock. Great condition as protected with tape from new so although that's lifted some decals when removing the paintwork is lovely.

I questioned this with Surly and they said they were putting the eyelets on other drop outs, so why not the Steamroller. They just weren't prepared to fork out to change how they make the fork. Why not go all the way?

It's so bizarre. The fork is the part which would actually lend itself to an eyelet, the rear is better suited to an axle mounted guard surely? Provided its a relatively flexible guard.

Mudguards and track ends are a pretty terrible combo anyway.
-

For me only as it is harder to remove the rear wheel.
-
• #2571
Yeah, fiddly, though when this was set up just right like this, you could get the wheel in and out without touching the mudguard, and without too big gaps.

Had time to convert my recent acquisition a few posts back to single-speed and remove knackered decals. Now to actually ride the thing.

Will a Croix De Fer disc fork ruin my steamroller?

My Steamroller in full-on winter commuter build, just added some DMR Deathgrips in an appropriate colour, best grips ever methinks

Brilliant, I think there just what I'm looking for and the useful installation video has convinced me that the lack of tabs isn't going to be an issue.
Will be throwing some money at Condor very shortly.
