I tried some Durano Plus 23mm mounted on 18mm internal width rims which probably came to about 26mm max, and that was completely fine. I didn't check with wider tyres, but I think 28mm actual should be fine too, 30mm actual width might be pushing it. Personally, I'm fine with pretty small side clearances though.
I will not get another chance to try it though: I discovered a defect / crack in the carbon on the right-hand-side dropout, and arranged a return / refund. So far it's going fine, I've even been refunded the return postage to China. The seller is claiming that this has 'never happened before', but I don't really want to try my luck anymore, Columbus Minimal it is.

Bought the Hylix 1" fork off ebay now - seller is marked as 'away till Feb 16th' but seems to have shipped them already anyway, fingers crossed. I paid for the slightly faster shipping, it's like £2 more but should see them here at least 2 weeks earlier - again fingers crossed!
In any case thanks to everyone who weighed in on this, and thanks to everyone who had an older fork lying around whom I had to disappoint because the steerer was 5mm too short - sorry but I really didn't have any room to play with there!
Anyone who wants a report on how the fork's performing in the future, send me a message - at this point, I'm curious to see it myself.
