  • Many factor involved, could be simply folding the bike, could be hit when in storage, could have been pressed onto something for a while, etc.

if it wobbling like a cassette it sound like something that can be trued rather than replaced and it's not abnormal for a chainring to be slightly out (especially entry level chainset/chainring), unless your cassette is worryingly all over the place.

  • Will keep the old one just in case and will 'true it'.

    Thanks.

  • So decided to take my injured Brompton to get it fixed before the working week and see the actual damage of the standard Brompton BB

  • Used to happen to me with the old one piece chainsets due to knocking it into something when carrying

  • So after taking the BB off, which was a hassle and a half with the right cup to get off, which is also the side with the exploded bearing, apparently the cup was installed poorly and for this reason why it probably lead to the broken BB.

  • As someone owning a recent/new brompton should I be worried about this bbgate?

  • Finally replaced the useless BB by following @TM advise to get a black UN55 and I must say it looks and feel stunning, granted it probably added a little more weight but if it more reliable and durable who am I to complain?

  • I dunno, this is my first time and I too am I recent Brompton owner. Maybe ask the rest of the forum if they have any better luck.

  • 5 years and no problems :)

  • Make sure in about 2-3 years time you remove that UN55 and refit and regrease the threads. They have a habit of lasting so long by the time you come to remove, the threads have seized!

  • This is not a common issue, the main bb change I do is from pre 2013 to change the cranks too

  • probably about 4 weeks?

  • There was a recall on certain age models to have the BB replaced a couple of years back, how old is yours?

And yeah, I dunno why Brompton use such rubbish units. UN-55’s retail at about £20, it’s not exactly going to break the bank.

  • only up to 2017 so not affected!

I agree somewhat, I would vote for a sealed bearing headset and front wheel, but all those small increases add a lot of the cost of the bike!

  • Ooooefff tasty

  • Got mine in November.

  • Yep, my spindle was one of the ones that snapped. Luckily I was freewheeling at 5mph. I shudder to think what could have happened if it gave way earlier on in my commute.

Once the replacement is starting to wear I'll also make the switch to a UN-55.

  • Just put Dura Ace cranks on innit

  • Is it normal the rear stay st hinge point to the mudguard starts to get loose and rattling after a year? If so is there a way to tighten that area to avoid it getting more loose and potentially break one of the arms?

  • Take a photo, draw on it what bit?

  • It’s the last stay joint on the mudguard:

  • Tried tightening the Allen bolts on the wheel? Careful as they’re small and shallow.
