  • Whenever I go mountain biking I am amazed at the amount of money on display in the car park.

Hit Peaslake any decent Saturday and the place will be full of nearly new looking enduro rigs, everyone in all the kit, bling VW T5 camper conversions to carry it all around. Just £££££ everywhere you look.

Many of these folks will happily put £700 on the credit card to be one of the first with the wireless dropper. Do not fear, they will sell.

Fortunately, most of these people do not appear to be active members of the lfgss community, so we can continue in our echo chamber of complaining about expensive/new stuff.

  • Willing to bet those T5s are mostly 'company expenses' so are pretty much -40%

  • Yeah, kinda my point. Some people just seem to have access to more money than you'd think. Cheap credit, company accounts, put it through the business.

I used to do a lot of windsurfing. Plumbers and electricians always had the nicest kit.

  • Some people just seem to have access to more money than you'd think.

If they stretch the rules or just plain break them. You are right though, I bet some folks will put a £700 dropper post as a legitimate business expense. For plumbing.

Which doesn't soothe the rage of those who feel like they play by the rules but feel 'nice' things are getting further away from them. I think that's what drives a lot of the vitriol.

  • Which doesn't soothe the rage of those who feel like they play by the rules but feel 'nice' things are getting further away from them.

I've told you before, the diamonds I sell are 100% legitimate!

  • Sort of agree. Nice things have always been expensive. I've always been more content having decent stuff, for a decent price and still rinsing past all the try hards on the shiny stuff.

This has worked for cycling, not so much for windsurfing. Those plumbers were always out in the best conditions, the flexible working pricks.

  • still rinsing past all the try hards on the shiny stuff.

Such pleasure to be had from this.
That said, I once had a guy on a brompton with wide bars and a real low front end absolutely smashing it behind me and I tanked it down New Kings Road trying to drop him but couldn't. As I turned off in Putney he waved and shouted "thanks for the pull!"
    Smug little wheeled prick

  • Just look at it this way:

    • people on fancier gear who are not as fit/skilled/tough as you are are suckers with more money than sense - just laugh at them, overtake them up hills and then low-ball them for second hand parts
    • people with fancy gear who are proportionally fitter/more skilled than you are putting their money to good use - much like one wouldn't get angry when comparing their gear/fitness to a pro, you just aspire to match/beat them one day
    • people who are the same fitness/skill as you on fancier gear are bastards - if you beat them you make them look bad, if you lose you just blame the equipment.
  • Nice things have always been expensive.

This is true, but back in the boomer day shit and basic things were "cheap". I'd like a Rolex (or JLC or whatever), but I won't buy one, because I need to cough up £20k of stamp duty (housing: basic but fucking spendy) this year. Yeah.

  • You guys are probably good enough to be pros, and get this fancy kit from your sponsors

  • Incidentally this is why I hate running (despite doing a lot of it). It's all fitness and genetics, not gear. I suck at running - I trained for 3 or 4 days a week for months on end for a marathon and I was still slower than fat people who did no training. Now that is a soul-crushing experience. I'm thankful that in cycling I can always blame my shoddy equipment when I'm last up the hill

  • I'm just waiting for my boast post to appear in the sh*tfixieskidderssay thread...

  • I just need to buy another 700 IG followers and I'll get all the kit I need!

  • *Stops following Howard *

  • No no, it's definitely my bike's fault that I'm slow. Definitely. I'm sure of it.

  • Plumbers and electricians always had the nicest kit.

    So much this

  • Looking for a large sized steel frameset.. surly straggler / genesis cdf style..

  • The Harry Enfield Character loadsamoney springs to mind:

  • Almost certainly a repost but don’t care.

  • I'm so done with matched forks and stems.

  • That derailleur looks unhappy.

  • Why this?
Such anger... You are making me doubt myself

  • I'm sorry, I guess it's just that it's overwhelming to me., too much going on. I can excuse forks, but stem is really over the line, what's next? Painting the lever blades to match?
