Did a bit of a 'hardwood flooring near me" search and realised that many will post free samples. And maybe I just ordered enough oak for a little box. Cheeky.

+1 for g&s. I got some chunky oak boards from them and they were planed square enough for me to just joint them straight together with no clean up required.

Among other curent projects is this one: Took a mold from an really pretty 14ft barges boat, have made the first hull, and am currently fitting it out. I really wanted to retain as much of the detail as possible, so spent about 2 weeks stripping and fairing the hull, before polishing and waxing. This means the grain of the wood and the nail heads all show through.
First attempt at making a split mold, or any single molding anywhere near this big. Pretty happy with how It's turned out.
Just started fitting out the first hull, which will be rigged with a balanced lugasail, as a low maintenance sailing dinghy for my dad. Going to start making the hulls to sell, with a set of templates and instructions/ guide lines for diy fitout.

Carvers: just messing about here, but should I be carving a bowl into the end grain? I suspect not in hindsight.

should I be carving a bowl into the end grain?
Wouldn't be my first choice :-)
What type of wood do you have there?
-
• #739
Amazing
-
• #740
Not sure what type. Hardwood is all I know. Found in the wood scrap bin. Think I'll get another piece and try from the side next time.
-
• #741
I suppose that you could manage with really sharp tools, but it still might be a right faff depending on the type of wood.

• #742
Side so much easier :)

Judging by the spalting between the growth rings I'd say either you're tools need sharpening and the wood isn't hardwood but some kind of coniferous wood. Not very nice for carving in my experience.

Could well not be hardwood. Any suggestions for what would be a good wood to use?
Edit: Easy to carve ideally, it's for my 8yo daughter to use. It's her new favourite pastime.
Lino cutting would probably be good for her to try too

The easiest wood to carve is green wood - ie. freshly cut. Preferable something without too many knots in it.
Birch, maple and hazel are all good sorts. -

Amazing work as ever sam

Do you make this sort of thing to sell?
-
• #748
Yes. A sideline rather than day job.

G&S? They’re good for mail order hardwoods. I mostly use em for dowel.
