  • @maynardeames - how old do think this Brompton is (aka how much is it worth?) I bought it second hand in 2012 and am debating whether to upgrade it to gears or to sell it and buy a shiny new one....

  • As it’s just a singlespeed the market is quite slim. The frameset is still lwb and current so I would probably recommend sticking with it. You can get it repainted if you need/want, all the brand new stuff will fit so there isn’t any reason to sell unless you have the cyclescheme etc!

  • That's great, thanks! Which is the easier upgrade, do you think - 2 speed or 3 speed? Am not particularly fussed about the weight difference - my commute is going to change so am mainly thinking about utility and keeping the maintenance relatively low...

  • it will be easier to go to 2 as you already have the wheel, so the cost will be lower! I would recommend a 3 speed for commuting though, single chainline etc.

  • @maynardeames is there a new Black Edition due out soon? Stocks seem to be super limited across Brompton and reseller sites...

  • We got a load at sjs. Due more end of spring. I’ll just build anything you like black edition though so your not limited to orange black or black lacquer.

Due to build a red and pink black edition next week

  • Nice. I'm just after an M2L black edition.

I like the orange but good to know there's other colour options. Assume you can build it with any other standard frame colour?

Does it affect delivery time and cost?

  • Yeah we build anything you like from black edition to Rohloff disc..

Just transfers the warranty to sjs as Brompton do not endorse it.

Cost increase from a stock bike slightly, and would be a slight increase from a stock black edition bike. Email ryan@sjscycles.com for a direct quote.

All Bromptons are collection only, sjs are 2 minutes from the train station and there are a few bus stations local.

  • This is the best front mudflap I have tried: https://rawmudflap.uk/product/folding-bike-mudflap/

When mounted it makes a deep box shape which really limits spray and shit getting all over the bottom bracket area. Really good bit of design.

  • Anyone fancy a tempest blue / black edition s6l with chrome hubs, superlight front wheel, 60t chainring, mks removable spd pedals, brooks cambium c17 slate, litepro 580mm bars, Ergon gs1 grips, Joseph Kuosac headset (sealed bearing), sunrace bb, ti parts frame protector.

Wheels just built, post and pentaclip like new. All else VGC.

  • That looks ideal, do they have one that matches for the back or if I buy 2 will they fit?

  • Not sure, I just run the front one with the standard rear. They do rear mudflaps generally, I have them on other bikes, but I don't know for sure how they would sit given the slightly more horizontal angle of the rear mudguard where it finishes. On larger-wheeled bikes they drop nice and vertical from the end of the guard.

They're only cheap though so if you're ordering the front you could give a rear one a go.

  • So last night riding home I noticed a sma ding noise coming from the bike, initially I thought it was either my seatpost ,saddle or even the pedals but after today’s ride with my cleats and off the saddle the noise got worse and worse and there was a grinding loud bang before the noise disappeared.

I initially thought it was a stone which got caught in a place which finally got dislodged but the next thing I noticed is my crank arms were swaying in and out.

    The BB is fucked right?

  • Is this normal for a Brompton that is ridden less than a year?

  • brompton bb's are cheap, just replace it

  • It shouldn't be doing that after 1 year - having said that, you'd be quids in to replace it with something of better quality - alternatively, prod your vendor for a warranty replacement.

ETA - Looking at that second link again, I'd say that's a bin job.
Contact your vendor for a warranty replacement.

ETFA - You're giving it too much power ;-)

  • @maynardeames

Any idea when SJS will have the TPW 3 speed trigger shifter in stock?

  • I brought mine from Condor, should I go there to say is this still covered or jas @amey said just replace the damn thing with something better?

  • Make it Condor's problem.
    They've taken your money.
    Meaning that you've consumer rights.
Consider changing the BB to better quality once Condor have addressed their obligations.
No real reason for you to be out of pocket over this.

  • The new Thun Brompton BB are complete shite. Replace with a UN55 or use as a buyer excuse to fit some carbon. UN55 will last years and years. Brompton use 119 JIS IIRC.

Parts with bearings aren’t regularly covered by warranty as it’s classed as wear and tear (I understand it’s not a satisfactory lifespan for a BB) But don’t waste your time trying to get another shit bb for free.

  • Boo! Yep the BB is fucked, going to Brompton Junction tomorrow to hopefully sort it out. Hopefully they’ll have UH55 in store to replace this BS BB. Can’t believed Brompton used this on their bike and sell it as a ‘race’ bike. What a load of tosh!

  • I really doubt Brompton junction will have a shimano BB. You’re a big boy, I’m sure you’re capable of doing the swap. You can get 118mm UN55 for £18 from wiggle.

  • Big in every way these days :(

  • I'd take it to a LBS to check hinge, braking surface etc.

Even if it cost £400 to service, it still cheaper than a new brompton.

  • I found my front chairing bent. Replaced it, but no idea how it came to be bent?
It was just slightly so, you could see it wobbling just like a normal cassette would.
LBS stated it was hit, but it hasn't. Weird.
