Get them jagwires! Btw, what stem are those, is they one of the adjustable angle stems? and could i trouble you for some close up pics.

• #122278
It's a suspension stem, I think. Can't remember the name of the brand but it's something like Softride (but not Softride)

It's a Girvin Flexstem. They were all the rage in the early 90s.

Yep, indeed, a Flexstem. I (temporarily) mounted it on this one as it was the only 1" stem I had around. I bought the bike with a Tioga T Bone stem... with a 45° angle.

Had one on my mtb back in 1992.

You are probably referring to the Allsop Softride, the stem Frischknecht used to have on his Ritchey back in early nineties.
-
• #122283
Ha, no, never heard of him. Softride was just in my head because it's reasonably descriptive of what the stem does (and it's also the name of a bike brand).

:)

I actually have a similar Proflex frameset on the attic. ;)

Thanks for the enlightenment, looks wicked though as someone who cycles almoat exclusively on asphalt, it best admired on other people's ride.

Did they work well?
-
• #122288
No. :-)
They flexed (as their name suggests) but it wasn't really suspension.

• #122289
They always appear in those "worst MTB products/what were they thinking /flop" lists. I think it's a bit unfair, it was a long time ago after all, and the idea of a little dampening upfront has not disappeared (Redshift stem, Spesh FutureShock, Trek IsoSpeed Decoupler etc).

Did they work well?
"Did they work at all?" would be a better question. I think the race wins on the Softride were in spite of the stem rather than because of it.

Any recommendations for a decent track chain whip? Maybe also a lock ring tool
-
• #122292
I've had one of these for the last few years, and it's a great tool ... [https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Combined-Workshop-CHAIN-WHIP-LOCKRING-TOOL-fixed-track-singlespeed-fixie/380760010313?epid=1088349547&hash=item58a710ae49:g:VPYAAOSwmudaJ~sV]

Evans' Hoy one is decent
