  • I’ve got a ‘91 Saracen Traverse that I’d like to use. It’s got Magura Hydro rim brakes. Would it be possible to replace these with V Brakes or is it likely the fork mounts are not compatible?

  • They're the same brake posts, but as Magura HS33s are the best rim brakes ever, why would you replace them?

  • Take them to your local mtb bike shop, let them all excited, get them bled then never talk about replacing them ever again
Edit: gotta bleed with magura's blue stuff, not shimomo or dot fluid

  • If you want shot of those tyres, I’ll put my dibs in now.

  • Hahaaa, nice one mate! If you've wanted one for that long then I think you made the right decision. You're on a rampage. Was it you who recently advised someone on here to never sleep on it? Cause that's what I did on this and look what happened!

  • Since we're on topic - which Magura HS-- model should I be trying to get? Is the current HS33 you can buy new better than older versions like those dayglo Racelines or Tomacs? The new lever design is fugly.

Also, are the 22 or 11 worth a look?

  • I have both the neon yellow HS 33 and the much cheaper HS 11 and these work similar. Just don't have the knob and contain bit more plastic parts, I guess.

  • but as Magura HS33s are the best rim brakes ever, why would you replace them?

True, however I know almost nothing about hydraulic brakes. Let alone have the parts to maintain/bleed them, etc. Do Magura still make parts for these? As @Miitch says, I'll probably just drop it off at my LBS to sort.
Sorry @stedlocks - not my pic I'm afraid

  • Shame! :0)

  • They're basically unchanged at the caliper end since the dawn of time. Parts are readily available and they're a doddle to bleed.

  • I really liked the lever on my Racelines. I doubt the new ones are much different, apart from being uglier, but I've not tried them.

  • Just discovered a complete SunTour XCPro triple chainset among my spares. Cranks (175mm) are well-nigh perfect and the rings all true with very little wear. Rings are 46-36-24. Back in the day this set was an alternative to Shimano XCR as I recall. Anyone here interested in taking it away?

  • One of the most beautiful cranksets ever.

  • Yes it worked pretty well as I recall. Which bike was it on? It is all lost in the mists of time.

  • Ned Overend (Specialized) used to ride with Suntour in the early nineties.

  • After realising the bars needed to go higher on my Marin ti, I spent about 60% of the original cost on a Velo Orange happy stem, and it’s taken a further turn for the ugly! Needs longer brake outlets now though...

Total spend is around £100 now.....

  • Great colour indeed.

  • Needed a new beater and now I am pretty hyped about this great eBay catch ! Some small touches needed - period correct pedals and bottle cages. Not really clear about the age 89/90 ? Does anyone know more?

  • Waaaw, that's great stuff! I would think it's a Windriver (as it has DX groupset) but it has custom colour so not sure about the year. Considering it has thumbshifters and a cable hanger (for the rear brake) it's 1988-1989. Later models had a brake bridge. Great find!
