Have you seen the Park Tool youtube channel?

If you've got the little funnel thing then just whack that on with some fluid in and pump the lever like fuck until all the bubbles are gone, good 3 or minutes so, tap the hose as you go. If you want to swap out all fluid, do that first then pump the lever like a twat after.

Just ordered a shimano bleed kit and new pads for deore m596.
Never bled brakes before, is it as straightforward as the vids show or any hive mind pro tips?
