  • I haven't bought it yet... and idk if it really matters.

Basically I recently discovered I have BT on my laptop, and I keep meaning to get a small mouse for it anyway, so I've gone down the typical pre-purchase amazon-wormhole and ended up at wireless mice.

I'd rather not have a USB dongle for it, as the main draw for me of a wireless mouse is not taking up a USB slot. Otherwise I may as well just blag a normal mouse from somewhere.

I'm looking at this Logitech M590 in grey as it seems like good value. But part of choosing it is based on the assumption that I can use it without the dongle.

EDIT: Just checking my laptop and it shows the bluetooth as:

    HCI Version: 2.1 (0x4) Revision: 0x534f

which I think means it's Bluetooth 2.1 - i.e. too old for any modern BT devices using Bluetooth Low Energy Technology

  • Sorry I phrased my initial reply really poorly. What I meant was that most wireless mice are not Bluetooth despite both using 2.4ghz. A generic 2.4ghz wireless device requires the dongle because it's signal uses a proprietary radio signal and cannot be picked up by a Bluetooth receiver.

The mouse you linked should work just fine without a dongle with you laptop

  • I have one of these (M590), it's a good mouse (although it was only £25 when I bought it so maybe worth looking at the price, although it looks like other colours are cheaper).

It's dual function, has bluetooth or a dongle. Both will work, I use it on my laptop via bluetooth so no USB required.

If they're not explicitly described as bluetooth then you'd generally still need the dongle, even if it's theoretically the same frequency.
