I've filed down the end of an old spoke so that I can put it into a nipple and grip the nipple by friction. The taper made by filing is just long enough to hold the nipple but not long enough to poke out the other end, about halfway I guess. The other end of the filed down spoke is inserted into a small piece of wood that acts as a handle. I cut a piece of branch from the garden but a short 10cm length of broom handle would be just as good. One of my most used tools!
