I've never actually done manual flash adjustments, is that bad? I always just stick it on full whack and see whats what

I'm sure there are people more qualified than me to answer this, as I have never shot flash with film. However, with film you know you're ISO and I you should be able to find out the guide number and then go from there.

In essence that's correct but expect the guide number to be in meters, or use a Flashmate if practical.
