Turbo Trainer Advice

  • That's pretty cool, wish I had a garage/shed to train in, not sure my girlfriend would let me get away with that in our kitchen!

  • I've turbo trained in my lounge, bedroom, back yard, front yard, kitchen, bathroom and hallway. Actually that's the full set. I don't have anywhere else. Oh, I've never done the work carpark although I have thought about bringing a turbo in a few times it never happened.

  • On a moving train would be good, always wished I could do exercise during long train journeys. Or in airport lounges, why don't they put gyms in airports?

Anyway, panic over, turned the phone on and no more vibrating!

  • I've dreamed of taking a turbo on flights back to Oz.
For one thing I'd be less fucking likely to die from another DVT!

  • The dream. Imagine the crushing embarrassment and looks you'd get from other passengers spinning up a Le Mond to 300 watts in economy.

Just take a three month merchant navy option next time. Sure there'd be space for a turbo, you'd be flying by the time you docked in Circular Quay.

  • you say that, but my garage is cold as shit, id love to train in my kitchen where its nice and warm but my wife would straight up murder me if I even thought about bringing a bike into the house!!

  • I've just bought a Bluetooth module for my turbo which, I think, is meant to report some type of power.

What should I do with it? Is it for trainerroad or something? It was an impulse buy with it being cheap on eBay, hadn't really thought it through.

  • I was thinking more First Class. Workout, eat, sleep, workout, eat, sleep, workout, eat, sleep, workout, eat, eat, arrive.

  • Yeah, fair enough. I get told off for turning the heating off on turbo mornings, otherwise it's too hot!

  • Brilliant

  • Interesting thread. Read the last 20 pages and learned a couple of useful things.

I'm having an issue with erg mode not responding quickly. Say I go from a rest interval at, say 100 w, to a power phase at, say, 200w, it takes 45 seconds for the power to get up to the right level.

I'm using trainerroad and it's a tacx vortex. Anyone had this or know how to fix?

I've been on to the TR support people and done stuff like put an extension lead in to get the single nearer the trainer, checked FW was up to date, turned off Garmin and Bluetooth on phone, but still an issue.

  • Power smoothing? Setting in trainer road.
    Have you re-calibrated it?

  • Power smoothing... Sounds just what I'm after. I'll have a look. Thanks.

I've done a bit of googling and had other things to try.

    • try it with power match turned off
    • try it using a workout on the tacx app
    • go to resistance mode and turn the resistance up (this is for another issue which is that I need to do silly high cadence to get to power in peak intervals or ramp test).

Will have a look at these now.

EDIT The other thing was what it is like with Bluetooth connection rather than ant+. Is there any reason why BT might be better?

  • Yes, got a kickr snap ... it's fine

  • Has anybody seen turbo trainers in store at Halfords?

Since British Cycling have scrapped the 10% Chain Reaction discount, Halfords is the only place you can make a decent saving but it’s in store only.

Looking on their site, none of the stores seem to have direct drive trainers in stock.

    Infuriating.

  • The one near me in Friern Barnet Retail Park usually has a turbo trainer area with one or two set up?

  • suggestions for a cheap laptop/fan stand to sit at (approx) eye level in front of my turbo trainer?

  • "Q: Can i use this fan as a boat motor? It sounds pretty powerful

A: It is a closely guarded secret as to the awesome power invoked by allowing electric energy into this apparatus. But seriously, this would not be safe for use as a boat motor due to it's strength, the boat would move at such an alarming speed that it would soon become airborne and might even reach the escape velocity needed to leave this planet's gravitational pull. Take care and be sensible..."

  • I have had this issue when using a Vortex and crank based power meter. When you use your own PM, TR measures your power over 15 seconds, then bases the resistance for the next 15 on what you just did, i.e. power is up, down, and all over the place. It's the only thing that stops me using it, I was so glad when Zwift started offering ERG intervals. I did sign up for a free month on TR about a year ago in the hope that they'd fixed it, but sadly not.

The Zwift interval sessions don't suffer from this problem at all.

(I use an ironing board for my laptop but have an 18 inch floor fan).

  • I'm thinking of replacing a bedside table with one of these:

It would hold the TV up in the air, I could put laptop on the tray and the fan could sit underneath. This would free up a bit more space for even more wheels and bikes (currently 8 in the bedroom ffs)

  • How often do you ride a bike one-legged outside?

    Specificity.

    You're welcome.

  • There was this one time.
