  • This may well be the answer! I can get a good deal on Fairlight so that's a very tempting option...

  • Three years ago Winston quoted me £60 for a disc tab brazed on the top of the seat stay, £20 for a brace betwixt seatstay and chainstay, £20 to remove canti mounts. A respray after that would have been c.£120.

Also had a quote from Caren Hartley of around £100 for the disc tab (so exactly the same without the paint) but neither of them had seen the frame in person so these were estimates to give me an idea.

I didn't go for it in the end but I'm still tempted (with a different frame now!) - maybe one day. Anyway a guide idea of pricing for you.

  • Spyres use regular road lever pull (as opposed to MTB long pull). Avid also do BB5/7 in road pull versions.

  • Really helpful, thank you mate! Something to think on...

  • Every day's a school day, cheers mate! That's definitely a live option then...

  • Anyone on here do pottery? Looking for present recommendations for my girlfriend (books, tools, whatever) who has been doing it for six months or so (so not absolute beginner but still quite beginner). Cheers

  • These temporary road sign frames:

Are they made of anything more complicated/toxic than mild steel? I need some angle iron for welding and there's loads near me just dumped.

  • yep - get her a class here or workshop time at turning earth or something from bernard leach

  • Cheers but she's already doing classes, thinking more of stuff around it.

  • A good present would be a potter's apron (split leg apron).

Edit: there are loads of books around pottery of course - a compendium of pots can be a great inspiration (e.g Edmund de Waal's The Pot Book, etc)

  • Same here.
My gf collects pieces from a maker called Debbie Barber (Insta handle debbinapril or similar).
Soon I may have a small Etsy shop. ;)

How about a split leg apron? Is she a thrower? [suggested already]

    Half-term short course of 1 or 2 days ?
Lots of schools around do that (Brockley/Lewisham, Richmond, Putney, Morley College, or try The Kiln Room in Peckham etc.).
    Subscription to Clay Craft magazine?
Buy her a Raku Days out ? (Google it)
    ....

  • Thanks for the offer.
Looks like I might go for the Aerorage, seems like a viable option. Cheers mate!

  • As @Constable_Savage said, likely just very cheap steel. It depends what you want to make if you can get enough length (fnar). And as with any salvaged stock, it the amount of extra prep required (in this case wire wheeling or grinding the rust/flaky paint off, cutting and straightening) versus just buying a few lengths new. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. But it's good to recycle.

I'm still dining out on the kitchen worktop offcuts that @Dammit was offloading for my makery fuckery.

  • Cheers - it's for a bike trailer (the frame thereof). The main square of one of those signs looks like it could serve as a passable base, with enough additional material to get four uprights of about 18" each. My understanding is that if stick welding, you don't need to get the metal that clean, but I'm a total novice.

  • If YouTube welding videos are anything to go by, you could likely get away with just cleaning the weld areas "properly". But then, it's just effort/desired results I suppose. It's your thing, do it however you want. No better way to find out than to just do it.

  • Fun! The only challenge is now seeing how close I can park my car to a slip road of the M66...

This is quite a good book of practical information if she's into collecting. Something from the Leach pottery is a good call (the dvd is nice https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/The-Leach-Pottery-1952-2nd-Edition-Remastered-dvd-hg077-05/14004364719?iid=132918095021&chn=ps) - but I prefer Richard Batterham https://sladersyard.wordpress.com/richard-batterham/ .

My Mum has a collection of about 5000 pieces she's looking to slim down but I guess that'd be a bit much :)

  • Cheers, I'll have a look at the books. I got her an apron for Christmas so that's done.

  • Just a bit of fun but who do you think is at fault here?
I took a mobile call yesterday from the double glazing company to ask if the following day's appointment time could be moved. My wife was going to be at home for the original appointment time. So, rather than fuck about, I said that I could not make any changes to the appointment time as my wife was non-contactable at that time. It was therefore agreed that no change to the original time would be made.
As there was nothing changed I didn't bother to tell my wife about the call. I didn't know that my son had taken the original call, to the house, and had written down the alternate timing and left the note for my wife. She didn't tell me about the note and the different arrangement apparently shown on the note. Today she went out and got back just as the glazing rep was about to drive away. The meeting took place and nobody died, phew.
Now I'm getting bollocked for not telling my wife about my phone call because it's all my fault that she nearly missed the guy.

  • Nothing bad happened, life’s too short
(Good luck sharing that sentiment with the OH)

  • My thoughts exactly.

  • Now I'm getting bollocked

Your son is clearly the problem here, tell him to mind his own business and leave your phone alone.

  • Is this not the reality of being a husband? - it's always your fault.

Surely you just acknowledge fault, apologise, and wait for it to be brought up again next time something else goes wrong.
