If you want to add an extra little loop, consider going to Fort William via Mull from Oban. It adds about 2 hours vs NCR78, and some climbing. You can get the ferry from Oban to Craignure, then the ferry from Fishnish to Lochaline, and up other side of Loch Linnhe. It's paved single track roads, and it's really beautiful - hardly any other vehicles.
The Garrison West pub in Fort William is the best in town.
Much appreciated for this nugget, will pitch the idea but worst case sounds a great an excuse for a separate trip. Will definitely check out the Garrison West, cheers.
If it is ‘rejected’ and a separate trip called for, you can always do a smaller version and get the ferry to Lismore, cycle down it and then ferry across to Port Appin, eat all the seafood there, carry on down the old railway as per your original plan
