i think it might be down to type of jack on the mic. see the 'standards for audio jacks' section here ->

the ground and mic bands are swapped so would need to be of compatible type.

X Box One. Rather than a headset, is there a way to use a microphone and retain audio through the television? I've tried simply plugging a microphone into the controller headset 3.5mm socket, but doesn't appear to work.
