This doesn't happen if you use a good litter, enough of it in the box and scoop regularly.
@lynx The clumps allow you to scoop out most of the piss, leaving clean(ish) litter behind meaning you get to keep the tray a bit cleaner using a bit less litter. Obvs no substitute for regular emptying though.
Our cat is super picky, if there is more than one or two pisses in his box he won't use it (and will use the carpet) so its important that we can separate as much piss out of the litter as possible, given that it isn't practical to change the entire box once each day. You can only do this with clumping.
Our cat has never been on the carpet (although a few nugs have fallen off his bum in odd places) but his favourite place to whiz is on these Ikea bath mats, we had two and after about 20 washes they still smell like cat whiz.
