Zither banjos are the enclosed-back English type. They have a hidden channel running from the headstock to the fifth fret for the high 'peck' string instead of actually having the tuner further up the neck. Invented by Windsor in the 1890s or so. I had one once, but it got stashed in a hot loft and sort of fell apart.
Funnily enough I had a notion recently about getting a 6-string guitjo/banjitar and tuning it Nashville-style with the high half of a 12-string set. Genius! Though I'm sure it's been done.
