  • My OnGuard PitBull U-lock tends to freeze up, last winter I've been spotted giving it mouth-to-keyhole various times to thaw it so it could be unlocked again. It didn't happen enough for me to take the time to look into it, and then spring came around and I forgot all about it. But as temperatures are starting to dip under zero I think it's time to do something about it.

    I'm quite sure I've read on here that WD-40 is a no-go around locks, and vaguely recall there's some powder for it? Or could I just spray some penetrating oil in the cylinder?

  • That's it, graphite powder. Googling it suggests it should also help against locks freezing up, maybe because if the mechanism is filled with lubricant no water can come in so there's nothing to freeze and seize?

    @JurekB A lighter is a good back-up plan, cheers! Might as well start smoking then.
