  • Ah the eye of the storm!

  • I have just received an email saying that my purchase was from an account that was compromised. Balls

  • Won't even allow 1

  • Ah balls, I got the same email, they haven’t taken any money from my account.

Sorry, tip can from reputable source...

  • Ah.... Gone in the time it took to try purchase.... Balls

  • Bringing the speakers together (or adding the PSX-R) has improved the sound stage so much. Now I understand when people talk about instruments being outside the speaker pair.

I just want to sit and listen to every song in my collection.

    Yay.

  • Damn, me too, I just got one from Curry's PCWorld at full price, £30! They are $15 on run-out in the US grrr

  • Used Spendor S6e's for £450 here

    Look good for the £.

S was the series before A. I'm holding out for A6r as I like my A5s. They are just a bit small, when it comes to shifting air.

  • Le Meh.

I might have to upgrade the cinema amp to a Onkyo with Chromecast then. 😏

  • ah shucks I got confused, apologies

  • Looking for some advice for my situation to achieve the best compromise for this space. We've tinkered at the low end of hifi before - Cambridge Azur, Wharfedale Diamond, various Marantz players. Almost all music now from Spotify but Mrs2wheels would like to retain the ability to play CDs if poss.

Have no real need for surround - would be happy with a modest stereo set-up - but struggling with equipment and placement in this room, so was thinking of the Sonos Beam/pair of Sonos One solution proposed by @mashton up thread - but for both music and telly. Thoughts?

Other option is something like the Yamaha RN803D in that TV unit and some passive speakers, but where would I put them in this arrangement? Have two kids under 6 so wouldn't want a stand to the right of the TV unit. Either side of the fireplace might be possible but they'd be quite close together and v close to the wall.

Another option is an all-in-one jobby from Ruark, Revo, Naim etc - but putting that in the TV unit would murder the sound so it would need to live elsewhere and run a wire to the TV - sub ideal.

Any insights greatly appreciated. Best sound/convenience for my £1k budget.

  • Argh!! Theo pushed in the tweeter cover on a speaker this morning. fucken fuck.

I took the cover off last night to measure the height for some new stands i'd like to try and didn't put it back on.

    i hope it isn't fucked.

  • active speakers on stands either side of the stove firing at the middle of the sofa with the yellow cushion?

  • @Timmy2wheels

Yeah, a lot of active monitors would also have bass tilt to counter placing close to the wall, and a wall mount option.

E.g. these https://www.thomann.de/gb/genelec_8030_cp.htm would could just about fit 1k£ budget (also available in white).

  • i hope it hasn't done too much damage

  • I'd seriously recommend something like the RN803 which will do everything you want, then pair it with a couple of passive speakers, possibly one near that table on the left (to avoid collisions!) and the other near the tv.

The 803 will mean you can add a CD player into the mix easily too, I'm pretty sure it'll have an optical input too.

  • ^ Thanks, both. Not a bad idea - I know Yamaha do some with streaming stuff built in. How would that be managed with the Genelecs, though? Chromecast on its way out I gather... And could a CD player be hooked up to something like this?

  • Hmmm, maybe the KEF LSX. They look lush.

  • You'd need a pre-amp or an integrated amp with preamp output for active speakers. I guess chromecast audio and a suitable used amp and a used CD player wouldn't set you back too much, but yeah, could be a stretch.

  • Theo pushed in the tweeter cover on a speaker this morning. fucken fuck.

Two days ago I managed to pull out the debts in my B&W tweeters, that have been there for ten years plus, using electrical tape. It was dead easy. Stick on and then pull off, gently but sharply. Simples.

I am not in any way liable for any damages caused by this advice.

  • Sonos Beam won't give you a CD option. I have no idea what they are like for music, I haven't used mine that way.

  • With all this chat about Chromecast and smsl amps I nearly bought this setup.
Can someone convince me that it's sensible, given most of the bedroom listening is radio.
It makes more sense to get something like that Denon or JVC doesn't it?
Cd, dab, blue tooth, etc and so on.

  • It's pretty much the way I've done it in the past. Some people like to gently suck them! Blu Tac is another option. It makes very little difference but like most of us it bothers you even if it's not there any more!
