  • On the subject of Merckx: i almost finished my 1980 signature professional. Rear brake cable is a temporary solution cause i couldn’t find a yellow cable that’s long enough :/ It’ll probably get silver wheels and new tubs in the medium term future and some panto bits if I find some for a reasonable price.
    P.s. And the pantos will be filled in yellow

    @WimVDD Your p-20 looks ace, i wish mine had the same paintjob. I have a spare vintage ritchey seatpost in 27,2 if you want/need it.

    @hacha I initially thought about getting a p29 but i couldn't find any good deal on it new and wouldn't have been able to buy a complete bike. Instead i grabbed a new P650 from bike24 for a decent price.

    That merckx is going to be lovely. Have you decide on which groupset you will use ?

  • Well I think I want to ride it regularly so that means something I enjoy using, something fairly modern. Possibly 10 speed Record carbon. Some sort of retro neo-retro build, 80s bike, 00s parts.

    On the other hand I've most of a Dura Ace 7400 groupset (and 7402/3) and have been looking for a something to put it on. 7400 would be period correct too. But I know I wouldnt ride it as often if I go with that.

  • What’s the likelihood that someone has a French bottom bracket lying around they’d want to sell me? Turns out they’re rather irritating to find. I know IRD make some bb cups but they’re rather spenny

  • @maxmurmann the advantage of those Neco bb’s is that you can tap them apart and mix and match the cups. It’s what I did to get two rh-threaded cups. The bb itself is quite cheap but I got about 11,000 miles out of mine.

  • I think buying the French cups plus a Neco ISO BB is cheaper than just buying one of their French BBs too :-)

  • Pretty happy with how this Atom project turned out although it took quite a different direction from my original plans. Purchased from @jimjamos with an idea to build a fixed road bike for the Harder Day in the Peaks
    ride but the frame is far too nice to drill. It also has some nice history to it with the frame originally being built locally to Manchester so will be kept and used as a training/outdoor track bike.

    Not too sure about the saddle yet; I need ideas for other mid-nineties options and some narrow compact drops might be also be option if there are any shiny 25.4mm <35cm ones?

  • maybe re-cutting the line before the saddle to have the "junction" around the top tube/seat tube intersection which would be more pleasant for the eye? or even have the junction directly where the guide on the top tube is

  • Thanks, they're just an old pair I'd got lying around but I'm really pleased with them. Built up nice and tubeless was a piece of piss.

    I know Ultra cables works but I am a purist...

  • Fixing up a tandem I bought during summer (for cheapz, £20 and went halfs with someone)

    It rides as it is but I want to make it solid more comfortable and safer!

    Has 26 x 1 3/8 wheels, caliper rim brakes and rear drum brake operated by stoker. The drum brake looks like it’s beyond saving. Is it a sensible idea to replace these wheels with modern 26” size? What issues could crop up? I’d lose the drum brake of course.

    Also has an old clip type headset, the quill stem that is currently installed seems a lot more modern and is very hard / impossible to do up tightly, as in you can force it to shift out of place if you hold the wheel still. Are there different internal steerer diameters but still ‘1inch’ (particularly for old bikes)?
