I should have room for 15-20mm clearance. Quite fancy the idea of non- filthy off-roading. No knars will be had.

Not at all, go for it! Should be plenty of room.
If you ride anywhere with claggy, clay-like mud, they will absolutely fill up, but I've done a bit off off-roading with 2.0 xc tyres under the same and not really enough clearance and it's been fine.
