Well done to everyone! Some cracking achievements over the year.
Highlight of the year is hard to pick. Main goal was Ennerdale Fell Race, for which I trained well but didn't taper properly and got a cold a week before, resulting in a slightly harrowing race. Getting round the 23 miles/7500' still felt like a milestone (despite having recce'd the full course a few weeks beforehand). And I feel like my running ability is a lot deeper now.
Stats wise, I was surprised to see that my total ascent was 47km (slightly annoying, if I'd paid more attention I'd definitely have aimed for 50km!) and total distance 802 miles/1291km. I had wanted 1000m total, but injury laid waste to that.
Looking forward to 2019, I've thrown my hat into the ballot for Jura, which if successful will give three big races to work towards, and definitely keep me busy.
Isle of Jura Fell Race, 25th May, 28km/2370m
"The Isle of Jura Fell Race is a great classic and a graduation test in rough terrain, fitness and fell running technique, not to mention navigation. It is one of the toughest challenges in British hill races at this distance"
The Tarsuinn Trail, 15th June, Isle of Arran, 26km/2000+m.
"A classic loop taking in some of the main ridgelines and traverses on Arran. The 26km with 2000m+ will take place during the early afternoon on Saturday 15th June and will include some the same technical elements of the main ultra race." It's fully marked/flagged and mostly on trail. No idea what the "technical elements" will be like (although not worried due to climbing experience).
Wasdale Horseshoe Fell Race, 13th July, 34km/2750m.
Classic Lakes AL. Steeper and with more ascent than Ennerdale. Even just checking the number is making me nervous tbh!
All the best to everyone for 2019. And with the race plan looking like it is, I better get going (I've not been for a run in 2019 yet!).
