• Selling my Quarq elsa 10R

Leaving aside the distinct reek of spam, £420 BIN is ambitious for a third-hand PM which was superseded two years ago by the DZero, currently available new for as little as £465

  • That DZero is a great price!

  • Would only need the P2M spider if I stuck with 3D24. Any real upsides to 3D+? Such wattage, etc.

No. If you've got the 3D24 cranks already, stick with them.

  • Are they? If that's the case they seem expensive for what should be pretty common. Maybe I'm just used to wheel bearing prices. I seem to go through them and ended up just swapping out the whole thing for Wheels Mfg BB.

  • The bearings are the same as BB30 bearings. But the BB also includes the external cups, which is the magic bit, together with the dust seals. If you know what you're doing you can press the bearings out of the BSA30 bearing cups and press new ones in.

  • Yeah, I've pressed maybe three or four sets into my Rotor cups before buying the Wheels Mfg option which also included the sleeve between the cups.

  • SKF 618062RS1 Rubber Sealed Thin Section Deep Groove Ball Bearing 30x42x7mm (61806-2RS1-SKF)

I paid a bit less for each (4+) but got next day delivery so that's why I probably thought they were expensive. I figured they should last longer but they were doing some big miles.

  • SKF 618062RS1...I probably thought they were expensive

They were expensive. In a rare example of negative hipster tax, the Enduro ones are quite a bit cheaper

  • Are Enduro as good though? I thought SKF were top notch? I don't actually remember if there was an option back when I bought mine but perhaps I was only searching for SKF?

  • Are Enduro as good though?

Yes, for these purposes. I'd generally divide bearing manufacturers into two groups, ones you've heard of and ones you haven't. The former (SKF, FAG, NSK, Enduro, EZO, Timken etc.) are the ones you want, manufacturers you haven't heard of are to be avoided, not because they are necessarily worse, but because the small price difference makes it not worth taking a punt.

  • I think I'd like a power meter for my winter bike, for training. Barring building a disc powertap wheel, I'd need crank based bb30.

Is it worth trying to pick up a second hand quarq for about £250, if the new is £475? I prefer to save a bit of cash but given that I think power meters are probably a bit more susceptible to being broken by misuse is it better to spend more and get the warranty as first owner?

and relatedly, what's quarq's warranty like?

  • is it better to spend more and get the warranty as first owner?

    Yes

  • what's quarq's warranty like

Stunning. I bought a Riken 10R, many years ago, and it died just before its second birthday. Quarq replaced it no problem. Then the replacement died just before its second birthday. Turns out that the replacement also had a two year warranty, so Quarq replaced it with a brand new Elsa upgrade unit, which is still going strong.

So they're not the most reliable units in the world, but my experience to date is that the customer service is excellent when it comes to replacing duff ones.

  • thanks both, very helpful

  • I'd agree with buying new and I've never had an issue with my Quarq DZero - although their iOS app is shit.

  • I've bought most of my PMs used and they don't seem to be much better/worse than buying new ones in terms of servicing issues. It's a bit hard to tell as the used ones do far more work than the new ones.

  • Does anyone know where the option to adjust power smoothing in the PC Sufferfest app lives? It's easy to find in Trainerroad (first thing under settings). I can't see anywhere to adjust it in SF.

The weird thing is... Mrs Owlz uses the SF iOS app on an old iPad and it applies zero smoothing. I'm pretty sure I've never changed the setting in the PC app and it seems to apply 3-5 seconds of averaging.

I can see there's a SQLite DB in the PC app's folder - perhaps I'll take a peek and see if it holds some configuration?

  • So you want zero smoothing?

  • Yup. Or 1s, perhaps. I think that may be the same though with the transmission frequency in ANT+?

  • I want to put a power meter on my mtb. It is a 2019 Scott spark, gx eagle boost chainset. What is the easiest route to a power meter?

  • Quarq or Powertap hub I'd imagine.

PMs and MTBs are slightly curious bed-fellows I'd have thought.

  • PMs and MTBs are slightly curious bed-fellows I'd have thought.

"We have tested your powertap wheel. A first single speed MTB wheel for us!" when I sent mine to be serviced.

  • Yup. Or 1s

How come? It'll be real jumpy Shirley?

  • Well, not with my magnificently smooth pedal stroke, obvs.

The current smoothing is just a bit too much - makes short (10-20s) intervals awkward.
