if your style allows cut your hair as short as possible when you start, quicker and easier to wash, not as much hair to tangle, and you will grow into it as your hair grows, also try and avoid water that is too hot, it can leave you with dry skin and hair can feel a bit tacky after a hot rinse, i find a rinse with as cold water as possible really acts like a conditioner and makes the hair feel much smoother, tricky i know at this time of the year .... brrrrrrrr
