Although I felt a bit weird about it, because it is technically 'dealing' in stolen property, he was more than happy to balance the shop's till with the £50. I didn't need anything else. Although the hugs, handshakes and fist bumps were obviously welcome!

I suspect I'm missing something obvious in the OP here - but do we know why the kid took the bike into the shop in the first place? I'm guessing he was trying to flog it (claiming not to know it was stolen?) but you convinced him to let it go for £50?
