• Big Ted's crack looks typical of damage caused by water leaking into the seat tube and causing rust. A slight distortion at the seat bolt clamp area and no mudguards will cause a little puddle above the bottom bracket unless there's provision for draining.

    So I think this one probably needs a new tube. The Scapin looks like a different problem - I'd certainly try brazing it, but I wouldn't spend money on painting before I'd given it a thorough road test!

  • That’s exactly right, a cyclocross frame that was often put away wet plus a (frankly stupid) sealed tube design that left a perfect are for a puddle to form (note that I blame the design rather than my laziness). Remembering back, I was told that as frame is 853 and heat treating it would need new stays as well as seat tube making it an unrealistic repair.

    Apologies for detail, really interested in the home brew crack repair!!!
