  • Hey everyone,

Thought it’s about time I did a project thread. Just picked up this awesome Scapin frame. Light, steel, modern geometry - only let down is it has a crack! The plan is to weld said crack back together as Ive had a great experience saving a frame in the past. (Please don’t abuse me as this is not going to be a pretty job but I just want to get the thing road worthy!!). As well as fixing the crack, I’m going to have a go at buffing the frame back up and getting the paint looking gleaming once again.

Recently acquired a 1” Time fork with a rad paint job but the plan is to bring it back to raw carbon and hopefully show the silver crown (a bit like pas normal Cannondale if you are familiar). I’ll be needing a 1/18th to 1” fork headset if that’s even a thing? I know some will ask why I want to use this fork but I think the skinny tubes fit really well each end! Bare with me on this :)

As for the components I’m thinking something along the lines of 10s Chorus/Record if all goes to plan over Christmas.

  • Some detail shots. Hoping with some elbow grease (machine polisher) and a couple hours work it’ll come up a dream

  • And here is a lovely picture of the said crack. I’ve tried to photo it in the best possible light. I am aware that Columbus Foco tubing is mega light weight but being the thickest butted part of the frame I have hope in welding it!

  • If you go for the repair you're going to lose a fair amount of paint around the weld area, are you thinking respray however much paint gets damaged or full respray? I've seen some pretty cool stuff on here where people have done frame repairs and "augmented" the paintwork in that area afterwards

    Beautiful frame either way, enjoy!

  • Thanks! Haven’t really had any thought to re-spray it other than a bit of rust prevention.. wear the battle scars with honour so to speak? But there is definitely potential to do something fun with it. Suggestions welcome :)

  • Does anyone know if there is such a thing as 1 1/8th headset/reducer that’ll fit a 1” fork?

  • What welding technique are you using?

  • Going to be Mig-Ing this one. Not so pretty as I said but should do the job and look “ok” after grinding it back down as best as I can

  • Yep.

Think Problem Solvers do something similar. Alternative is a CK 1 1/8 to 1 inch 'devolution' headset conversion which is a neater solution imo.

  • Great looking frame, I look forward to seeing this repaired and on the road.

  • Bare metal might be a bit brave with tubes that thin, maybe clear lacquer over the bare area?

  • Oohh, subbed!

  • Wonderful frame. Scapin frames are real nice and deserve to be better known.
Never heard of Columbus Foco before!

    Shame for the crack.

  • Isnt one option a brazing torch and filler rod ? never tried it but saw one the other day and thought about it. im guessing you know its vital to drill little holes at the ends of the cracks to prevent them spreading and maybe get a sheet of 0.xmm steel whatever thickness it is to practice on. Also +1 on wanting to see this alive to ride another day.

  • I'm no expert but this sounds very brave. Really short pulses seems to be the most obvious method (I'm guessing you're just joining the two sides of the split rather than adding a filler metal/plate).

Can't wait to see the results though.

  • I've would have bought it if you weren't quicker... holes on both end of the crack and bronze filler, if you ask me. I would like to hear what the frame builders have to say, apart from chucking it. Looking forward to the build. MIG sounds crude to tubes this thin

  • And whatever you do, just keep an eye on that area, like continously. It's a highly stressed area as we all know

  • Go see Winston if you're London based.

  • Thanks for all the thoughts. Here’s what I’ve managed to do with Mig welding before (first time doing it). obviously thicker metal but I’ve been riding this for well over a year or so with no problems. Being only 69kg I’m not the most powerful rider so I have hope :) ofc will be drilling tiny tiny holes at each end of the crack first.

  • Really interested in how this works out as I'd love to be able to bring the below back to life (I've been advised that not possible without new tubes and the resulting Trigger's broom)

  • FWIW I had a really similar crack fixed by brazing and it cost £120.

  • Big Ted's crack looks typical of damage caused by water leaking into the seat tube and causing rust. A slight distortion at the seat bolt clamp area and no mudguards will cause a little puddle above the bottom bracket unless there's provision for draining.

So I think this one probably needs a new tube. The Scapin looks like a different problem - I'd certainly try brazing it, but I wouldn't spend money on painting before I'd given it a thorough road test!

  • That’s exactly right, a cyclocross frame that was often put away wet plus a (frankly stupid) sealed tube design that left a perfect are for a puddle to form (note that I blame the design rather than my laziness). Remembering back, I was told that as frame is 853 and heat treating it would need new stays as well as seat tube making it an unrealistic repair.

Apologies for detail, really interested in the home brew crack repair!!!
