we had a yepp mini on a kid hauler up until the age of about 3 and a half, then switched to a cheap toptube mounted seat until she was old enough to ride her own bike.
for me, it felt much more secure having the kid between my arms than hanging off the back.
also meant you could chat easily with them and point stuff out easier.
this was on a single speed 26" MTB with 44 16 gearing.
not too much in the way of hills on our school run though...
