could it have been to do with egg/highpath engineering? they made several pedaling aids and still continue to this day. There have been so many attempts to offset or improve the pedal design from Shimano AX inboard bearings through to cleats that prevent toe dipping. Im currently using the Power pedals like Bjarne Riis promoted which only rotate one way.
